Cold start and won't restart
Cold start and won't restart
Newbie here,
Two "problems" here. First is the stupid cold start. I've got a totally stock TPI with a painless harness thrown into a 67 camaro. The car runs awful for the first three minutes, sometimes just dies out. Revs between 300rpm and 2000rpm. Ater 3-4 minutes, the car revs up to 1000rpm and idles smooth and runs fine.
After driving for 15+ minutes, if I shut the car off, it won't start again for at least 20 minutes. I know it's a starter issue since I don't even hear a clicking, but is this common because the motor runs so hot? will a separate ground between the starter ground and chassis work?
Just looking for some advice before I take it to a mechanic.
thanks
jim

Re: Cold start and won't restart
You transplanted the intake, did you check or replace the coolant temp sensors when you did this?
Re: Cold start and won't restart
I actually didn't do any of it... I traded my factory five cobra for this. I checked the CTS, and threaded it in as far as I could, but how do you know if it's working or not without a datalogger?
I've reset the IAC and TPS at least a dozen times; i dont think timing is an issue since it runs perfect post cold start. that would knock out injectors, plugs, and wires too, i believe... let me know if that assumption is wrong.
what else could it be? and where can i find a CTS?

Re: Cold start and won't restart
The cold start issue sounds like a bad coolant temp sensor. The restart problem sounds like the ecm. I've had both problems, and both were a b!tch to find. New GM parts fixed my issues. I stress again, I used GM parts. lol

Re: Cold start and won't restart
There are 4 coolant temp sensors on a TPI. One in the driver side head that sends a signal to the gauge. One in the passenger side head that if i remember correctly turns the second fan on and off. The one or ones that send data to the ECM are in the front of the manifold base slightly off to the passenger side. the 2 plug one can be purchased at autozone for about 10 bucks its a SU109 sensor. The other one I had to get from GM and my buddy works at a dealer so it cost 15. Not sure what your price will be. Also the air intake temp sensor is an SU109 as well its located under the plenum. Concider that as well, but I doubt it to the source of your problem
Re: Cold start and won't restart
OK, I replaced the CTS this weekend. Still no good on the cold start. When warmed up and driving around, i have noticed that if i let off the gas completely, the car will "coast" for a long while regardless of what gear i'm in. when i let off, the rpms won't idle down as quick as i would expect. And sometimes when i get on it, it bucks a little. Is this a bad IAC? How can you tell a bad one from a good one? i cleaned mine out, and set minimum air properly, so i know when i put it into diagnostic mode that the pintle extends out(I can hear it). Just need some advice, because i'm about to take it to a mechanic and let them deal with this mess.
thanks

Re: Cold start and won't restart
Do you have a check eng light connected to the ecm on the 67 camaro?
Do you have an ALDL connector? If you have both, you can check for codes and maybe get a clue on what's going on. You really need a scanner connected to monitor all the sensors. Also, is it a MAP or MAF type TPI?
Does it have a cold start injector?

Re: Cold start and won't restart
Your starter may be suffering from "heat soak". Is there a heat shield on it? I'm guessing not. Your best bet is to pull it and have it tested, that will shed some light on it. Even with the starter being hot, It should make some attempt at cranking.
Also, for best results, info to ZZ28ZZ's above questions will be a big help in pinpointing your problem.

Re: Cold start and won't restart
For the not restarting when warmed up, i was planning on the heat shield and better ground route. The real problem is the cold start.
I've got the ALDL which tells me the TPS is low and there's a low coolant temp sensor. I've measured the TPS at .54 and the coolant sensor on the front of the block is brand new. So I reallly think it's something else that's sending those codes, because I know the TPS is set right, and it moves linearly between .54V and 4.09V.
