Ok guys a am new so be nice. I have a 86 z and it has the 305tpi. I a wondering if this set up will work on another engine. Or am I wrong going that way. I want to swap the tpi into my s-10 but I want it to have more power than this car has now. I hae a 327 would thatwirk well with a tpi set up? I would like to get good drivability out of it but also take it to the track once in a while and not get laughed at. I would really appreciate any suggestions you gents have thanks. ELec

i wouldn't put it on a 327. It would be a mismatch. A 327 LOVES to rev high, i've seen 327's stable up to 8K rpms. TPI on the other hand is made for low end power/torque. A stock TPI is good to about 4800-5K rpms, and like i stated before a 327 can go higher than that, so i'd stay away from that combo if i were you..

327's revving high has to do with the way they were setup from GM back then; they had carb's and flat tappet cams; they couldn't make a flat torque curve. The olde dayz don't matter today when EFI is key

The 305 TPI will work on the 327; key here is to cam it appropriately. The MAF system will compensate for a lot of things but I severely recommend headers, and make sure the cam is right.

would i be better off with a 350 swap under the tpi? will this combo work for a while right off of the car I want to do it right so i will take as long as possible. I just thought the 327 would be awesome to tpi. So do you think I should chang the knock senor to that of a 350 and injectors how about a afpr. Need help with details Thanks guys Elec

Save yourself some cam selection hassles and go with a 350 block. To go from a 305 to 350, you wont have to change anything but your:

- knock sensor
- injectors
- chip

There are many things you can do, but this is what you absolutely need for a basic swap.

350! If you have a later 327, you can just hang a 350 crank on that block, don't buy a complete engine. If you have a neighborhood quarry, drop the 305 block off of that, or donate it to orphans, or use it as a boat anchor.

definatly go with a 350. Your putting this in a s-10? My friend who lives in Camanche has a sonoma with a 355 in it. It runs 13.0 in the quarter. v8s make those trucks scoot.

Why is "stick in a 350" always the solution around here?

If you already have the 327 and want to use it, it can be made to run with a TPI setup, including all sensors, harness and the computer. If a 305 and 350 run with basically the same setup, then a 327 will also. With a mild cam selection you may not even have to get into custom PROM work.

I'd say 327+ZZ4 cam+TPI+custom PROM would make that S-10 a helluva lot faster than it is now, and if you're not satisfied just pull it out and go with a 383 or 400+SB later. Just my $0.02.

think some base porting would do some good though?

What I want to know is will this set up work? Will it even be worth doing. I want some decent performance but drivability. Will the 3200 stahl work with a aggresive cam will this car run right? will it make mor power than the 305? what do you think It will do?

The 3200 stall converter will work just fine if it's from a decent company like Precision Industries or Yank. Yes, you'll definitely make more power with the 327 than the 305, assuming it has at least a good of a cam and heads. A little extra displacement never hurt.
