SLP Runners

Well, I don't really like the look of these things, but lack of funds dictates my direction. Are the SLP runners in any way comparable (performance-wise) to the AS&M, Accel, or the TPIS? If not, are they worth my money? I'd be attaching them to an Edelbrock base. With the SLP headers I'm about to buy what kind of gains could I look for in addition to the runners, base, and my signature? Thanks

I have the SLP runners on my Edelbrock intake. I have no proof they are better than stock but just looking at them they have to flow more air than stock runners. I also cleaned them up and matched them to the intake. I picked mine up used/cheap.
I noticed a gain when I added them to my stock L98 5.7 TPI motor (redundant) so I imagine they also help my ZZ4TPI breathe better.

I had a stock ported base plate modified to fit Vortec heads With a healthy cam(224 deg dur.@.050 .525 lift 1.6 rockers), when I put those SLP runners on my car, granted I have a lager air demand than you, I went 4 tenths faster! So in my opinion there great.

I put the SLP runners on 5 years ago,and I felt a noticeable difference. They have a long flat torque curve that makes good power from 2500rpm to 4800rpm.

A freind of mine was contemplating buying these runners, and some people actually said their cars got slower ... a 14.0 to a 14.2. Now it was a while ago, and I have no idea who these individuals were, but I personally don't trust the siamesed long tube version. There is a tech article somewhere on this board where whoever it is said that he was glad to trade that nagging low end torque for high end HP, and that just turned me off to the whole idea. Admittedly, recently everyone seems to be having good results with them. If there is anyone who also dislikes siamesed runners, let me know and I guess we can form a club or something.

If I were you, though, I'd put the money in the bank, and either buy the AS&M's or Accel's, maybe a SuperRam. I figure I'll either spend the money twice now, (once if I buy them, once when I buy As&M's), or I'll spend it once a little bit later.

Judging by the picture in the Summit catalog and from what I’ve gathered on this board,, the original or old SLP design had an fully open or siamesed runner for #5 and #7,,, and for #2 and #4 runners. I think they attempted to produce “dual” torque peaks,, or at least make a wider and flatter torque band with them. Myself,, I don’t particularly care for that design principle,, and I’ve got a feeling most of the negative feedback on the SLP runners are from folks with the old design. The newer design SLP runners - as cast, are “siamesed” around 1.5” for each runner, making them only about 1.5” shorter than a stock runner. I’ve modified a set of the new design for our IROC and I like them. I would not have bought a set of the older design.

i had the slp's on my car and they were acceptable for the price.i would recommend taking a sawzall to them and cutting out the divider of each runner.with an 8in. blade it's no problem.by doing that you effectively shorten the individual runner length giving you higher rpm capabilities.as far as the design;for modifying they're perfect.start at the top of the runner cut down, turn the runner over cut down, turn the runner 180* and continue, the divder will come out in a large piece a little cleanup once the main portion is out of the way will be neccesary.

I think the people who may have problems with SLP runners are the ones who have poorly matched setups. I have until now heard nothing but positive things about SLP runners...they are probably the closest thing you'll get to a Super-ram for a fraction of the price...but you do get what you pay for. Another mod that helps the pocketbook when you have knowledge of porting and customizing parts!

I have SLP runners and I think they perform well all thou it did take some getting use to the way they look if you polish them up they look a lot better I think the biggest problem people originally had was that they wear not porting the plenum to match them so the results were not as good but if you get a set of large mouth gaskets and port mach the plenum they do really well plus it shortens the runner size like 1 ½ Don or Dan cant remember last name but he use to have a web site that showed this if you do a search on slp runners or porting you will probably find a link to his site.
