What the hell was that?!!?

Ok I was in a race tonight, the car hit 2nd gear, went up to around 3500 RPM then all the sudden just lost power and started back firing?!? what would cause this? the fuel pump is brand new so I dont think that would be it, and the car didnt spit any codes. do you have any ideas what might cause this? its never done this before. then just driving around normal it was perfect, get on it again and it would start back firing. I dont get this, maybe its running rich? or maybe way to lean?

Might have a toasted plug wire or two, or a fouled plug or two. Check the wires for signs of arcing and pull a plug or two and give them a look.

Some ideas......

From: pgh,pa,
ok get some extensions and some swivels, as well as a spark plug socket that has the area for a wrench to be put on it,
you should be able to get to the 2 front spark plugs on each side from up top, however i have found it much easier to get to the back 2 spark plugs on each side from underneath the car,

also another thing you might want to check is the ignitoin module, and possibly the pickup coil on the distributor...

Blue,

Maybe I should loan you my "orangutan" arms. I can change all my plugs from the top, but it does require some creative combinations of sockets, wrenches, extensions, swivel ratchets, contortions, Tantric/Mensa positions, and determination.

The more difficult plugs are #8, #6, and #5. #2 can be a real treat, too. If you have all the factory plumbing, AC, and the master cylinder/prop valve in the way, it's going to take some time. #6 and #8 are easier if you use the plug socket and a wrench that fits the flats on the socket, them spin it out by hand.

After you do this a couple of times, you'll appreciate a little anti-sieze on the plug threads to allow them to be installed and removed by hand more easily.

I really second that ignition module failure. Just judging from your description, I doubt it is spark plugs.

third on the module possibly being bad. a good way to check is when the car starts misbehaving look at the tach. if it drops to zero it is usually the module or a ground somewhere.

My Z was missing, and backfiring as well after humbling a 5.0.(old one) I changed to BOSH PLATNUM plugs. The guy at the Chevy dealership told me that my injectors seemed to be "pouring" fuel in more than "spraying" it. He told me to put some hotter plugs in. The BOSH plugs (I was told) Do not foul as easily, thus a lesser chance of missfire due to fouled plugs. I put the new plugs in, with good quality 8mm wires, and it now runs very smooth, with better response. I am getting new injectors soon.
Just my .02$
