car nead help

I just got a 1987 factory yellow hard top IROC-Z 305tpi today. When i got it the previous owner said that the fuel pump had gone bad but they replaced it. after they replaced it they drove about 15 miles and it stopped. it started back up and they drove it home but after it had set overnight they could not start it. now when i got it i sprayed starter fluid in the intake and it will stay running, but without the starter fluid it will start for maybe a fraction of a second and then die.new relay i replaced the fuel filter, while i had the fuel filter off i had someone turn the key to the position before starting so i could see if gas came out and it did. That did not fix the problem. does anyone have any ideas of what else it could be?

Wow. One post, and you say take it in? This *is* a tech board, after all.

To the OP, what's your fuel pressure like? Beg/buy/rent a gauge to test it. I can't think of any further diagnosis without that info.

Re: car nead help

first thing that comes to mind is the cold start injector . check to make sure the egr is not stuck open . cts could be bad but i doubt it .

if you let the motor get hot (till the fan comes on) and shut it off will it start right back up ? once you get it going how good does it run ?

p.s. "JesterHead1651" learn more or get another hobby ....

Re: car nead help

you'll need to retype that last post because it does not make any sense .

till you can get a pressure guage on it theres not much you can tell . it needs 40lb of pressure , youll get fuel to come out of the fuel rail fitting even if there is 10lb but i doulbt it would start .

Re: car nead help

You have a 1/4 inch flare fitting with a schrader valve on your fuel rail. Get a hose for r12 refrigeration gauges, a 1/8" pipe thread to 1/4 flare half union. and a mechanical pressure gauge. Assemble everything and you will have a tool to measure your fuel pressure. You have to find out what your fuel pressure is before you can go farther unless you have a calibrated eye that can tell the difference between 25# and 40# by the spray pattern.
