what do you think of my 383 tpi build

im gonna start buying parts for my 383 tpi build and i was wondering what you guys think of this heads, cam and intake setup.... and i wanna keep my tpi....

Afr 180cc eliminator heads
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Gm hot cam kit
http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance...753463%7C10707

My Tpi intake setup includes the following

fully Ported siamesed plenum that accepts a 58mm TB

stock throttlebody with slp airfoil

fully ported and siamesed slp runners

ported edlebrock intake

crane's Adjustable fuel regulator at 50 psi

slp cold air intake

SVO 24lb injectors

how do you think this combo will do..... My 700r4 is already built up to handle 600 horsepower... and my rear end is gonna be rebuilt with 3.70 rear.....

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

Have you considered AFR 195's, and Comp XFI280 cam? I have the 195's on a stock short-block L98, with XFI268 cam. More low-end than you can use, good top-end HP. I returned the LT1 Hot Cam I had, in favor of the Comp Cams unit.

You should check out TPIS.com and check out there zz409 cam. Works great and still gives me good mileage. 21MPG

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

The XFI268 has a decent lope to it; from the sound clips posted on TGO I have heard it sound milder, and wilder, than my car. Might depend on the exhaust and / or tune. With the increase in displacement (383), I would think the XFI280 would be better. I have the XFI280 cam that I want to try in my 350 (or will it be a 355 by install time.....?), sitting on the shelf next to a HSR.

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

I'm having a 383 built now that is going to use the XFI268 cam and AFR 180 Eliminators that will get a ported SLP LTR intake. Should idle smooth as glass and have gobs of torque.

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

The 180cc heads are designed for 305's, 327's, and mild 350's. Putting them on a 383 engine will be a choke point. The 195cc heads are designed for hot 350's and 383's. Get those instead and you'll have a better combo.

However, its my opinion a 383 isnt needed on a TPI engine. The long runner system already makes gobs of torque, and combined with a 383, you will have way too much torque that will fry the tires and get horrible gas mileage. The 180cc heads and LT4 HOT cam would be awesome in a 350, though. My Corvette heads (170cc) and LT4 HOT cam pushed my car to a 12.80 @ 108.50 ET, and made 318 RWHP and 419 RWTQ. Dont forget you will need a custom chip.

My thoughts were that if the 180 Eliminators flow what the old 195s flowed, I should have a motor that makes great power and has a very crisp throttle.

I dont think I follow you on a how extra torque wil cause fuel mileage to drop. I would think that extra torque would allow for less throttle to maintain a given speed thereby giving extra mpg.

so you are really saying that a 383 tpi is bad.... my intake isnt stock at all.... everything is ported and aftermarket so my powerband should have moved up some.....

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

I have afr elim 195's and 383 and LT1 intake and xfi 280.

Results in sig.

The tpi in a 383 with that cam and smaller heads would be choked.

A bigger engine moves more air, which requires more fuel. That's what makes more power. That is also why 4-cyl engines get better fuel mileage than 8-cyl engines. Less air in means less fuel needed. More air in means more fuel is needed. That extra torque from a 383 happens because you are sucking in more air to feed the cubic inches, and adding more fuel to go with that extra air.

88fastgta, did you read the thread at the top "Our quest for a better flowing TPI" ?? We have found that its not the size of the TPI runners that hinders power, its the length. You could have 6" diameter runners, but if they're 17" long you're still going to make max horsepower around 5000 rpms. If you're building a 383 TPI engine to make power, you want short runners such as a StealthRam or MiniRam. Long stock-style runners will just give you a boatload of torque down low that will feel great at first. But then it will get old as you're spinning your tires when you launch, and you cant hook up.

I guess I wasn't reading your post as a 350 vs 383 statement, but as a 180cc vs 195cc on a 383 statement.
I made all my decisions based on torque when I chose all my parts. Like I stated, I went with the 180s because they flow what the old 195s used to. I've seen the old 195s on a 385 perform very well. If the new 180s can move the same air as that guys 195s, why not take the extra throttle response and torque. I have no plans for my car to see the track more than a few time; I want a fun driver with cold A/C.

That sounds like a good combo.

But as said before, the tq is awesome, but if that is all you do is spin and can't hook, then it sucks.

Then again, after you get that combo going, you can always get another intake(lt1, mr, sr)

well do you think afr 195cc and the lt4 hot cam would work better than the 180cc version.... cause i was thinking about just rebuilding it to a 355......

and which version should i get the 65cc version or the 75cc version.....

Yes for the 383. Either for the 355. I'm currently running 200cc Dart heads on my 355. Runs just fine.

Yes I do. However the LT4 Hotcam is of an older design with very slow ramps. You would be much better off with the Comp Cams XFI268 cam in the same duration range.

The XFI268's duration is actually 218*/224* @ .05" lift. Check the "cams" department at Jeg's for full specs.

There may be a version for a hemi available...look in the section titled "GM OEM roller cam 305-350," or something to that effect.

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

There's lots of great cam designs out there. The comp XFI 268 looks great. I bought the LPE cam before I realized what Comp had to offer but I'm not worried about it. I made 330 Hp and 349 Ft/Lbs with my HSR on a very lean AF ratio, so there's more to be had......

As far as the Heads go, the AFR's are a work of art!!!! I went with the 180's because I wanted crisp throttle response and the fact that the car was gonna be a street driven car (Besides some say that the new 180 eliminator's breathe like the old 195's) Go with the 65 cc chambers unless your gonna boost it later...... The larger 76cc chambers only decrease your compression ratio

Lingenfelter's book states that if you have two cams with the same duration pick the cam with the higher lift and quicker ramp. (It's a good read)

Good Luck

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

Do you have the LT4 cam already??? You could always use more lift and the AFR's Will appreciate it...... I'm just thinking that there's gotta be better out there.

I know it seems like splitting hairs but if your spending money and doing all the work anyways...

LT4 Hotcam=
Operating Range: 1,800-5,800 RPM
Advertised Duration: Intake 279 Exhaust 287
Duration @ .050 : Intake 218 Exhaust 228
Lift with 1.5 Rockers: Intake .492" Exhaust .492"
Lift with 1.6 Rockers: Intake .525" Exhaust .525"
LSA: 112'

"XFI" 268 Hydraulic Roller Camshaft
Operating Range: 1800-5800 RPM
Advertised Duration: 268°/276°
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 218° Intake / 224° Exhaust
Lift: .570"/.565" w/1.6 Rockers
Lobe Separation Angle: 113°

I would think that 5800 RPM is too high for a TPI??? But I'm no expert... I guess it depends on how good your intake is. Try to pick a Cam that will work in the Rpm range that suits your intake, because your intake will limit your working Rpm range. (which has been the problem with TPI's)

Do you think that the worked over intake and runners will match the kind of Cfm the Heads will flow? Your gonna pay for the best flowing heads in the business..... Take advantage of it!

Just a couple of things to think about before you start spending a ton of cash and spending alot of time in the garage.

My Have fun!!!!

Do you have any numbers on your car? Dyno or track? I'm set on AFR 195's. I just need an intake (BBK maybe) and a nice cam. Do you still have TPI? Did you need larger fuel injectors?

Sorry for all the questions.

Do you think that the worked over intake and runners will match the kind of Cfm the Heads will flow? Your gonna pay for the best flowing heads in the business..... Take advantage of it!
Picking a cam that stops at 5000 is a great way to limit yourself in both horsepower and torque. Stock TPI may stop at 4800 or so but a bigger cam than stock will still get you more power from idle to 5000. I gained a bunch when I went from the ZZ4 to the LT4 hot cam, even though the power stopped climbing after 5000 rpms. If you're going with the AFR 180 heads, get the XFI268 cam instead of the hot cam. The XFI268 is newer with better ramps for more power and better idle. Keep in mind you'll still need a custom chip you do yourself or someone does for you in person. A mail-order tune probably wont get it close enough.

For tips on porting your intake manifold, see the "quest for a better flowing TPI" sticky at the top, and search for my thread on "visual TPI intake ports."

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

Why are you concerned with a rougher sounding/idling engine when you could have something that works properly and makes great power????

Keep doing your homework and make a informed decision....
(Dad always said "would you jump off a bridge if someone told you too ")
I realize that your trying to make an informed choice but I see you flipping alot
There are great books out there. I've posted them in the Aftermarket product review

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

im pretty sure you could use your 1.5s with no consequences other that the fact you wont have the lift that the cam specifies. and without that lift, you wont get as much power. if your going for a more stock sounding engine, then you need to consider more what your exhaust system is composed of. if your running true duals, get an X pipe, not an H pipe, and find mufflers that have better DB reduction qualities. magnaflow has some really great mufflers that lower the DB's without restricting flow. also, get a resonator.

if you want a performance engine, you arent going to get it by looking for a cam that restricts your system, but "sounds quieter." my advice is get the XFI268 cam, and enjoy the thumps. why would you want a quiet, V8, musclecar anyway? thats what the ford and import groups are for (kidding!:P)

You can use either rockers. The difference is about 5-10 horsepower.

Re: what do you think of my 383 tpi build

I hate to hijack the thread, but I'm thinking about turning my '89 Formula into a 383 as well. I read a lot of things in this particular thread alone that seem good. I'm new to the v8 scene and I just want something with good power and driveability. I don't know what type of power a 383 motor is capable of, but I at least looking for 350rwhp. I'd appreciate any info on what I need to get to achieve that goal or if I even need to do a 383 at all. I don't plan on going to the strip with it very much if at all and just want something I can drive around town with and occasionally get on.
