91 305 TPI reliability

sorry for a newb question, but its new to me.

I looking at maybe picking up a 1991 TA with a 305 tpi for a second DD/future project. How reliable is the motor? are there any issues that i need to know about? it has 82k on it and its all stock.

And what fuel mileage should i expect?
thanks
Phil

Re: 91 305 TPI reliability

If your sure it has only 83k, and you do all the basic tune up stuff I`m sure you already know to do.It should be a pretty good car.Just being a older used car you never really know.My opinion and experience is expect to spend money and have to fix stuff.I drive 89 k1500 4x4 4.3 V6 and my Iroc. Two older chevys.Besides basic tune up stuff all I`ve HAD to replace is the transmission in both.Everything else could have been done without.I`ve also had 2 305 tpi cars and the engines have held up fine.My ex brother-in-law still drives my old T/A I bought it in 98 with 55k sold it in 00 or so with 125k.MPG`s...mine got a combined city/highway 20-22 mpg.Never really drove straight highway. However I`m getting a combined 19-22 in my current 350,and I have a HEAVY foot.If the price is right I`d go for it.A Chevy will run bad longer than most cars will run at all.

i second shadygrady, the sbc is almost indestructible with basic maintenance. tpi is very good too, very reliable thats why i am converting my car from carb to tpi.

Re: 91 305 TPI reliability

You're doing almost exactly what I did some years ago. Its really going to depend on the past life of that motor. If it was reasonably maintained it should be fine. I can only suggest one thing, its a lot easier to replace valve stem seals with the engine sitting on a stand so you might consider doing that before you install it. I should have, and now one of these days I get to do it in the car. Replace any obviously leaking seals while you're at it.

Yeah,I forgot about that. Not something you really have to worry about here.I cant imagine having to worry about adding rust restoration to my car/truck.That would prolly put restoration out of the ballpark for me.
