1991 305 TPI not running right at all

I don't really know how to explain my problem anymore, so i just made 2 videos of what it does. The first video is what it very rarely does and the second video is what it usually does. It runs very rich with very strong exhaust fumes, rough idle, and when driven it shudders under acceleration or coasting unless you put the clutch in. And sometimes it doesn't even idle at all. I have no clue what could be wrong, except the computer, no vacuum leaks. Any input would be great appreciated, i don't want to have to sell such a beautiful car because i can't get this fixed .

It either gives me no codes, or it gives me a code 12, which indicate nothing is wrong, but there is DEFINATELY something wrong here

Re: 1991 305 TPI not running right at all

your getting a check engine light and no codes , that makes me wonder about that ecm .

try dropping the ecm down and checking the plugs . then try taping on the ecm case with the car running to see if anything changes ..

Well, the first thing i notice with that video is the check engine light flashing like that. It should either be on, or off. No flickering on and off.

I would def take a closer look at the ecm, never seen a SES light do that

Also, i assume you pulled the codes the traditional way stated here? Did you count 12 twice then read any other flashes?

Re: 1991 305 TPI not running right at all

Problem solved! (Hopefully!)

I was putzing around today and decided to take the ECM out and have a look-see at it. I took it apart and found nothing wrong with it, I unplugged the thing attached to the board that was the 2 pull tabs on it, (no clue what it is called, remember I'm no expert at all) checked all the soldering connections and such and it all looked pretty much new. Than i plugged the ECM back in and started the car. It idled rough and low for a few seconds, and than it jumped up to normal, no check engine light. I shut her down, and it idled at around 800 rpm, very smooth, no excessive exhaust, took her for a spin and when it warmed up it idled at 600 RPMs and pulled unbelievably stong! I am thinking maybe the the electrical harness had a loose, and when i put it back in i really jammed it in there. It runs better than it ever has and I am very pleased it was something so simple, i feel like an idiot. Thanks for all your help guys, you rock!

Re: 1991 305 TPI not running right at all

not totally uncommon . if the problem comes back replace the ecm . the old GM ecm's are known to have a small problem with component's on the board to come loose and it is not something you would see if you take it apart . that is why i told you to tap on the ecm with it lowered in the car with the car running . but hopefully it was just a loose plug ..

i have had this problem now with a camaro , a cadillac and a caviler (over many yrs) .

After two days, the same problem is back. Rough idle and shuddering at low rpms when driving and right after changing gears. I am thinking of heading up to the junkyard to see if i can find an ECM for cheap and try that i guess
