Problem fouling plugs

I just purchased an 87 GTA 5.7TPI with 700R4 trans. It was doing what it is doing since I got it. When I got it home by trailer I drained all the gas it had been sitting for three or four years so I figured get the bad gas out start new. It sounded like the car was mis firing. It wouldn't idle for more then a few seconds and you couldn't rev it up because of the hesitation. So I pulled the number one plug and it was fouled and the gap was way off about .48. So I put new plugs in and gapped them at .35 what it calls for. Car fired up ran great idled and reved. Let the car start warming up it ran good for about 8 minutes and started doing the exact same thing all over again. I was thinking something electrical before I changed the plugs but once I changed them and it ran better I'm starting to lean more towards fuel injection problems. This is the first Fuel injected car I have worked all the other ones were propane and carbs so this is a new world to me any help would be great thank you.

Re: Problem fouling plugs

I'm gonna add a little to it. I went out this morning the car sat over night fired right up like it does everytime it just doesn't always run. this time it idled and rev like it should. shut the car off tried starting it twenty minutes later and it was acting up again. pulled the number 1 plug and it was wet.

Re: Problems keepingmy car running

The plug is wet?!?! Is the plug firing? What are the conditions of the wires and what is the timing at? What is your fuel pressure at? Knock out the basics first before trying to get ahead of yourself. Often times, the plugs are set right but the wireset isn't clicked on the end of the plug and or the ignition timing is retarded way back cause the knock sensor is being stupid or the o2 sensor is showing a lean condition. If it idles ok for a few minutes than dies, check out the fuel filter. That is a common problem in our cars. If it gets clogged, the fuel pressure will go down while the car is running, if fuel isn't coming from the vacuum line on the regulator, than you should check out the filter.

The fuel pressure is at 45 spiking 50. the fuel filter is brand new and not clogged. i have checked the plug wires and rechecked the plug wires again. plus when the car is started after it sits it runs just fine for a few minutes. it is once it starts to warm up that it starts having issues.

Sounds like a CTS issue.

Re: Problems keepingmy car running

Ya I got mine fixed to well it seems to be good so far. Replaced the pick up coil and solenoid in the distributor and it runs like a champ now. not bad considering I only paid 600 bucks for the car cause it was running like that and it was a sixty dollar fix.
