choosing cams
choosing cams

i was lookin into getting some cams for my 88 firebird formula TPI and i was thinking of getting these

Will this be alright on my car, or not a good idea, because my car is almost completely stock except for the exhaust

Re: choosing cams
With your setup, that cam will not work in the least. First thing you'll notice is stock heads can only take so much lift, probaly around .470" or so. After that, the car would need a tune probably even before first start up. There's other reasons too, but it's just easier to say it needs something smaller. If you want the biggest cam possible, it'd be best to take a couple valve springs out and see how far the valves can possibly move and get a cam with somewhat less lift than that. Other options would be to have the heads machined to clear more lift, get a different set of heads that already can take more lift, or just get a cam with .450" or less lift. That last option is the cheapest/easiest, and would still likely get you .25 in the 1/4.

Re: choosing cams
This is what you want.
http://www.lingenfelter.com/mm5/merc...egory_Code=C30
Part Number: L210025087
Lingenfelter 74216 Camshaft L98, LT1, LT4 1987 - 96 TPI - Hyd Roller 213/219 .493/.502 HR112
You'll need to upgrade the valvesprings and use different retainers. Vortec retainers will work if you use conventional springs.
