Whistling noise at idle, anyone had that?

Hey guys, 350TPI thats making a whistling like sound audible at idle, but i thinks its all the time. also one of the belts is slipping at about 2000-2500rpm screeching.
It sounds more like a squeek like something's about to die?

That would most likely be a vacuum leak! Spray some WD-40 on all of your vacuum line connections and possible leaking areas, intake gaskets, runners etc. When you get an increase in idle you have found your leak. Do one area at a time and wipe off. Take your time and start in one corner and work your way around...LOL
As far as your belt squeal?? Make sure they are all tight and not overly worn or cracked...

If you replaced the belts then they may need to be readjusted.

Re: Whistling noise at idle, anyone had that?

nah mate.
If you have v-belts a tensioner will not work.
You can however remove all the pulleys and switch to a serpentine belt setup(much nicer than v-belts)

This will also require changing all brackets on the engine, and if you have no smog pump or a/c comp. you'll also need the delete pulleys.
If you have a serpentine driven a/c comp. for the car then smog delete pulley is not necc. if you don't have it on the car, just a diff. belt.
Hope that helps.Let us know how it turns out.

Re: Whistling noise at idle, anyone had that?

Once, an alternator made a screeching noise a few days before it died, but I don't think it's common.
Usually a belt, check the treads on it

Re: Whistling noise at idle, anyone had that?

Did you have a vacuum leak?? Check the pulley groove on the ac, if it's rusty at all sand it, if still making noise, put candle wax on the belt while it's running. BE CAREFUL! Don't put any of that spray on belt dressing crap, it sucks. The wax will heat up and melt into the porous belts and metal, the rest'll just melt right off, couple times w/the wax and it should be good...

Re: Whistling noise at idle, anyone had that?

Most common cause of the noise you described would be a loose belt or vacuum leak, but it is also common for alt bearings to make the same noise.
you can convert to a serp belt setup, but you'll to change everything...brackets, alt, ac,ect.
As stated, belt dressings are not good, but WD40 or silicone sprayed on the belts will quiet noisy belts also and is easier than applying candlewax.

I don't know I never tried WD40, I just wouldn't put a lubricant on belts.
