zz4 cam

I bought a zz4 cam off e-bay and when i had it setting next to my stock l98 cam the l98 looked bigger. I measured both with my calipers and the l98 cam measured approx. 575 compared to the zz4 @ 470? The l98 cam is all machined while the zz4 is still rough casting between the lobes. Is it possable the l98 cam isnt the stock cam? THe l98 cam does have numbers just after the fuel pump escentric

Re: zz4 cam

There's no way a stock cam has .575" lift.

Re: zz4 cam

I looked anyway. I got it new in 2003 from scoggin-dickey. It is fully machined between the lobes, there's a pink-ish paint stripe around it just forward of the dizzy gear, the lift is 0.474/0.510", and the back end has two markings. The larger reads 071-FM31, and the smaller reads 279 00L. It has a fuel pump lobe, and one small white paint stripe just behind that lobe.

Re: zz4 cam

These numbers were stamped by a computerized engraving machine.

Re: zz4 cam

Measurements sound right for a zz4 cam.

I can't imagine having a .575 lift cam and thinking it was stock.

Re: zz4 cam

The two cams you have may have different size base circles. Most aftermarket cams have a smaller base circle than the stock cam.

Re: zz4 cam

Since you mentioned the one you got isn't machined between the lobes, I think it is not really a ZZ4 cam. Install it in a block, get a dial indicator and a degree wheel, and really check it out.
