Computer Problem

Idk if I'm posting this in the right place. My mechanic just finished my swap from a 87 305 TPI to a 89 Corvette TPI. I used the wire harness from the 87 and when I hooked up the 89 computer from the Vette the car wouldn't start. It cranked but didn't start. I changed the computer to the 87 and it started up, and my service engine light came on.

Why did it start with the 87 computer?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Computer Problem

Vehicle Anti Theft System (VATS) - Engine usually turns over but but the injectors are disabled, I think. If that is the problem, you're gonna have to do some homework. Like getting the proper size resistor and soldering it into your harness OR get one of those black box simulators they sell on eBay. There be some other work arounds but that's what it sounds like you need.
Just my guess...

Re: Computer Problem

hey tiny how goes in it tenn?
you mentioned vats and i wanted to ask where the chip is located? i got a complete system from a tpi to put onto my tbi. my tbi is vats and the tpi - including the computer and wiring came from a vats 91. so where is the chip and can i just swap them, so i dont have to get a new key for the car with a new resistor chip on it?
maybe i can go to gm and get the chip with my key and ask for the match.
this is something i never thought of but i like the vats system.

Re: Computer Problem

did you search this forum and google the problem?
i am doing that right now, but tomorrow morning i will call the local gm dealership and ask the parts guy. he will know.
i just did a search of VATS in this board and got over 1000 individual postings on it.
would like to read them all for you and give you the answer but i think i will let you do it for yourself.
i do remember there was at least one post on how to shut it off, but i cant remember where.
since i may have the same problem i did look a little - https://www.thirdgen.org/vats_passkey_system is one site to look at.

Re: Computer Problem

The amp for the Vette TBI is most likely not the amp for the 305 FB check manuals
on the current requirements.

Re: Computer Problem

I have been researching and my key doesn't have that little pellet that people have talked about, but I'm using the engine I put in ran with the VATS key and that's what's causing the problem?

Re: Computer Problem

excuse me but are you reading any of the links people are putting up for you?
learing about your car is supposed to be part of the fun.
tinymay and waltb are putting up your answers or at least where the answer is.
i posted the link with the answer too.
we are here to help, but not to spoon feed you.
come on the answer has been given to your more than one time.
after you read it, then ask if you still dont know, but i think you will understand.
and if you have read enough to know about the RESISTOR in the key, you should have read how to disable it. i even gave you a link that is titled HOW TO DISABLE VATS and it took less than 10 minutes to find it for you right here on this board.
you remind me of the man who kept praying for God to let him win the lottery. every week he would pray and pray.
finally one day a voice came booming out of the clouds.
the man fell to his knees and asked, god what is it i can do for you.
to which god answered "GIVE ME A BREAK - AT LEAST BUY A TICKET!"
get the point?
