Locating Intake Air Temperature Sending Unit.
Hey guys my 87 iroc has a 350 TPI out of a 91 iroc i do believe and i got one of those power chipz off the internet, mainly going for better gas milliage. It says to hook it to the Intake air temperature sending unit. Can anyone tell me where to look for this. Thank you.

Re: Locating Intake Air Temperature Sending Unit.
i believe that a intake air intake sending unit is a maf tpi system. if you have a 91 then its a MAP tpi unit and does not use a air sending unit.
the maf tells the computer what is happening by measuring the heat of the air into the tpi and the pressure.
map uses a different system.
but others might know better than I.
now if the 350 is from a 91 and the tpi is original then the maf unit you are looking for is right up fromt on the passenger side of the intake manifold.

The 350 motor most likely is a 91 but the TPI may be from the original 87 305 that the car originated with. I'll check the right side of the intake in the morning. Also the instructions for my power chip said the connector i am looking for only has 2 wires going to it if this helps any.

Alright guys thanks for the help once i get the car running like it should stock (well stock for the modifications to the motor) i'll install this chip and see if its any good or not. They advertise 32 - 40 hp, better acceration and gas milliage.

Re: Locating Intake Air Temperature Sending Unit.
86 T/A is correct, it is on the bottom side of the upper intake. It is a PITA to get to without taking off the plenum.
What Chip is this? I am guessing they are tricking the computer into thinking the inlet air temp is lower. Most people relocate these to the airbox infront of the TB to do the same thing. Would be interesting to read the chip to see what all they have done to get that much HP out of just a tune.

The IAT isn't a chip it is a sensor. I can't believe an IAT would give more than 2hp and maybe 1/8 mpg better. All it does it measure the incoming temp of the air to engine and allows for minimal fuel changes through the ecm. To get 32 - 40 hp you would need alot more mods than that.

I agree with you! if it is just a "chip" that goes to the IAT and not a E-prom, there is NO way it will get 32-40HP. I would be curious to see how they are claiming those numbers if it DOES have a e-prom swap.

Re: Locating Intake Air Temperature Sending Unit.
If you attempt to fool the computer on the actual air temp coming into the engine, The computer doesn't compensate for the actual air temp and I would think the ecm would either spray too much or not enough fuel. I know it is not a substantial amount. I have seen alot of kids do this with Cold Air Intakes. Some claim it gives them a little better mileage but it usually not worth the cost of the system. I do agree that colder more dense air entering the engine is better than hot air. But, fooling the sensor is kinda like fooling the (KS) knock sensor into thinking you don't have knock. You could end up getting into alot of trouble..

Re: Locating Intake Air Temperature Sending Unit.
The problem with the so-called IAT, is that is really just a glorified water temp sensor, that really only ends up reading the temperature of the upper intake plenum.
Here's how you correct that "problem"..... IAT relocation

Re: Locating Intake Air Temperature Sending Unit.
If this is what I think, it's just a resistor that makes the ecm think that the air is colder than it really is, enrichening the fuel mixture. I had one and no hp gains and less mileage....makes the engine always run rich.If anything it will eventually foul plugs or even trash the motor. Get a refund if possible.
