2 3rd gens,need advice
I may not be on the right thread but here it is.I have a 89 with 88 350 tpi and 700r non t top,and a 91 with 305 tbi with a 5 speed and t topped. I want to use the 5 spd and the 350 tpi combo in the t top for fun driving and and impressive power, don't know at this point what are my up grade options for the money. And I want to use the non t top 89 for some more serious power, more street- strip. Do I want to waste the tpi on the cruser car or use it on the more serious set up?When it comes to the carb set up i'm I know what I can do and I'm leaning very strongly that way unless any out there can give me a good reason why I shouldn"t.I like the looks and thought of the tpi or tbi but it seems limited to me on what I can do with out spending tons of money compared to the carb set up.If you had these 2 cars and was shooting for goal I am what would you do?I realy don't feel the 5 speed will be a good ideal for the strip open to opions thanks for any advice.

Well, I would use the tpi 350 in the street cruiser. The 5 speed will be ok behind the stock 350 tpi as long as you dont beat on it too much. TPI is great, but for high rpm power, the carb is usually better and cheaper.

This is kind of what i had in mind,But I the efi subject I'm weak,I know what I can do with the carb.Which can I go further with as far as performance and economic cost the TBI or TPI ? I've got a few BB's laying around kinda thinking of putting one in the serious ride, now keep in mind that this car wil still be on the street.

Well, I dont know what state you are in, but some states have issues with the BB swap. Also removing the FI from these cars might get you into trouble. One easy way out of the legality issue is to get classic car insurance. (This lets you get out of the inspections in MOST states.) Do that and you can go hog-wild in most cases. Carbs are usually cheaper, IMO. I'm a fuel injection nut, for the most part, but a lot of people like the ease of tuning that comes from a carb setup.

I'm in MO. and I don't think I would have any probs with this right now. What kind of HP can I pull out of the TPI motor? And if you have any combo set ups for this motor I would greatly appreciate.Like I said carbs are my thing right now and may be because I don't really know what to expect out of a TPI motor. For all I know I may be able to get to the same place with a TPI as I could with a carb set up and get better mpg as though this would be a big issue, but every little bit counts.Money saved on gas would mean more money to put into the car.A win win situation.I would like to have some working combo set ups and may be some dyno reports if possible.

Holy crap, listing all the working combos would take a month.
But, one thing you said I wanna point out is: "For all I know I may be
able to get to the same place with TPI as I could with a carb." Usually
people with that reasoning ditch TPI for something else. TPI is not girl scout
easy to make instant power with, so you could save yourself the trouble.
On the other hand, if you learn the process and love TPI like most of us
here do. Then, it could be a extremely fun and a growing experience.
Search for the combos, there is literally billions of options buried on the site.
Don't let this persuade people from posting up combos anyway, post 'em up!

I appreciate that. And what I meant by the combos' I realize that this could be very intent but more less looking for a goo starting point.I could see where thr TPI could be the ticket,But where I'm getting scared away is my ignorance of them and the pricing I'm seeing in my performance catalogs. For instance in summit intake bases for 4xx,then runners for 400 this is 800 bucks and I've not touched cams chip injecters, heads etc. which right now I've got the 14101083 i believe was the casting # don't much on these heads. What I have found in some write ups is that a set of old school heads on the motor just the way it is would give it more hp.old school 461's or 441's which the I'm sure the chambers are mo cc on these heads = lower comp. thanks for the info

Well, one of the great things about TPI (and most fuel injection setups) is driveability. Fuel economy is another. Is it expensive? Sure. Dosent have to be, though. My current (Small) project is my 86 IROC. I am using a complete vortec engine for my 350 swap. I am putting a mild cam and a scoggin-dicky base on it. Later on I will upgrade the runners, but all in all, I will have spent less than $900.oo for around 130 extra HP. Then there is my twin-turbo T/A.... After everything else, I will have spent around $3500.oo JUST on the fuel inj parts! (ACCEL dfi thruster sfi, injectors, single plane intake, elbow, dual-sync distributor, etc) But to me, it's worth it.
