Alil advice/direction

87 5.7 tpi burning about 1-2 qts of oil every 2-3 wks. Valve steam def need replacing have only had the car a few months so not sure the condition of the block or if the heads are stock. knw it has a comp cam in it and some rockers/lifters. sizes unknow. Should i pull the heads and have em gone thru? Go performance if their stock heads? Def wouldnt mind the extra hp gain but just dont wanna break the bank in doing all this. I was thinkin LS1 swap later on when i got the funding for it but idk now.

Well that could be a few things, BUT what I need to know is, do your valve covers have breathers? Clogged breathers will allow oil to burn. Another very common reason are the valve seals, check them two things, if it doesn't stop burning oil you might have worn out pistons rings.

It's not really a valve job, I think valve cover gaskets/seals whichever you prefer to call them are 5-10 dollars, real simple to put on. The breather is what's on top of the valve cover in this picture. If you have a clogged breather filter if you even have breathers, that can cause oil to burn.

Re: Alil advice/direction

no i dont have those on my covers.....mines are aftermarket edelbrock covers that tied those breather holes back to the CCV system i believe its called that. this is an 87 in an 89 body btw

if the valve covers were leakin by wouldnt this make leak the oil out an visiable?

its been mentioned that the valve guides are more than likely wasted as well

Re: Alil advice/direction

You'd have to check on the side of the heads, sometimes oil drips right down onto the headers and literally burns it right on the outside.

Lol you're welcome, some of the more knowledgable people on this site didn't catch onto your thread though, I've only been a member for about the same amount of time as you.
