INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Hey Guys,
I just got my IROC running last week, but I had a runner intake leak which I had to fix. I did get the engine broke in before I fixed the intake leak. I fired it up today, and I noticed that number 7 header is glowing red hot. And number 5 header is faintly glowing. Could I have connected the injectors wrong like crossed them since they are not labeled.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Nope, doesnt matter where you hook them up.
Checked those spark plug wires, see if they are crossed?

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Its unlikely. The TPI system uses batch fire for the cylinders. Which means that all 4 injectors on a single bank fire at the same time.

Unburnt fuel could be causing it as well if its burning in the primaries. As mad max said check the spark plug wires, and plugs themselves.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Also check for exhaust leaks especially near those cylinders, or the left side (driver) Y-pipe flange.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Great thanks for the info!
I'll do all that, plus a parts store by my house is selling Accel Header plugs. They are shorter for more clearence, so I thought I'd pick those up and try them.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

your timing should be @ 6 BTDC with ESC wire disconnected (tan / black stripe) located at the passenger side near the AC blower

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Ok?
how can that be if stock small blocks are set at 10 degrees advance, I don't think my engine would even run with the high lift it has in the cam. Just to confirm my setting I'm using the timing tab of the block at 16 degrees to the crank balancer at the zero mark. I'm Using a adjustable timing light. I'm lining up the crank balancer zero mark to the 16 degree engine timing tab. This is of course is with disconnecting the distributor/set timing brown wire.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Way too much initial advance. Set it at 6 or 8.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Ok!
as a example should I set the base timing using the crank damper zero mark and set it to the timing tab at 6 0r 8 advance ?

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Yes. Or since you have an adjustable timing light, you can put that at 6 and have the mark at zero on the tab.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Thanks!!
I'm guessing that should also solve my glowing headers problem.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

It may. The computer is going to advance the timing around 15-20 degrees at idle so with a 16 base it was way too high. Might fix it, you'll know soon enough.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Well dropped the base timing down to 6 degrees, as the engine was warming up the headers again began to glow 5 and 7 with 7 being the worst. I also went with Autolite plugs # 3923 and gapped them at 45 thousands.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

I noticed when its running you can hear a ticking sound on the drivers side. So I pulled the valve cover off, and found number 7 intake is loose, but 7 exhaust is not when I set the engine at number #1 TDC.

Re: INJECTORS CONNECTED WRONG?

Yes the ticking stopped, and the header number 7 only faintly glows at base timing 6 degrees. Once I reconnected the ecm and it started to learn, that to seems to have gone away. I'm assuming at 6 degrees it was too retarded and was heating up. Then once the ecm kicked in it advanced the timing and the glowing header seemed to have stopped.

Ecm does not learn spark.
