Re: porting stock base?

I've been wondering the same thing. I think I remember reading on here that the aftermarket bases flow just a tad more then stock right out of the box, but they have more material that can be used to make the ports way bigger then you can with the stock base. Since I only have a 305 I figured there isn't much point in spending $250+ on a used aftermarket base. I think the intake runners are the biggest restriction.

Re: porting stock base?

Yea they can be worked a bit but its not so simple as ported base = more power. You can port the base (although theres not much material to work with) but if ported too much the runners become the restriction. Worse yet a big part of this is not just flow but also air velocity. If the base is ported significantly beond what the runners can flow with the runners are limiting flow and because the same amount of air thats flowing through the runners is flowing through the base the air in the larger ported base will be flowing slower than the factory base actually hurting performance. Now that's not to say you cant clean up the casting and all that and maybe make some small gain (probably more throttle response) but i wouldn't really port out the base too much beyond cleaning up the casting unless you were going to do runners too in which case port away. Extrude honed factory bases actually outflow aftermarket bases out of the box.

If you're decent with a grinder and have/buy the right burrs, there is enough material you can remove so the stock base can flow a little better than an unported aftermarket base (out of the box).

If you have the stock heads on a 305, I'd do no more than remove the lip from the intake where the runners bolt up, smooth out the casting, and gasket match it. Anything more would be a waste.

Re: porting stock base?

Yeah Bad SS is right. I just ported my stock base about 2 weeks ago. And what I saw was there is just nothing you can really do other than knocking down the little rings in the ports where the runners bolt up and some traditional gasket matching. Truthfully you just need a whole new system if you want to get serious power out of a TPI. Sucks but its true.

But that's not to say that there is no power to be had by porting your stock intake. There is a worthwhile amount of power to be had, especially considering the cost of the upgrade manifolds. And the fact that your stuff you have is free because you already have it.

I say go for it.

If you can get an extra intake, you can get it honed out www.gethoned.com .it's going to run the same price as an aftermarket intake.
