Hey guys, I have a 91 T/A 'vert with the 305 TPI engine that was giving me problems. I dropped it off at the mechanic and they told me it's most likely a bad distributor so the cost to replace it will cost about $350 tops including labor, parts, and diagnosis. That's $350 American and I'm in CT. Am I getting ripped off?

 

I rebuilt dist is about $100 and takes about 20 mins to install. But you're also paying for them diagnosing it and insurance that they guessed right. So, it's on the high side, but not crazy.

Of course you can put a new pickup coil and module in it yourself for <$40 if you're handy with a wrench.

 

I had a feeling that was a little pricey. If I knew what the problem was I would've done it myself. But they said $350 maximum so it might be less and I'll see if I can talk them down further.

 

That's about right. A reman. dist. list for about $220-230. Book time is 1.3 hours labor to replace it. At my shop parts and labor would run about $340.

I told my dad about the repair cost and he freaked out. The first guy on this thread said that a new distributor costs about $100 and you're saying it's $220?

 

Summit racing says a direct replacement dizzy for you trans am goes for about 200

So $350 to include labor ect. seems reasonable to me

 

or you can get a billet aluminum pro form aftermarket dizzy shipped to your door for 65............ install it in 15 minutes and call it a day.

dont get me wrong it probably pays an hour to do but it takes 15 minutes to install and isnt hard at all......


my remans at my work cost about 120 i beleive but its a rip off for what you get.... the only wear parts in the distributor is the pickup coil or module both of which may cost you 50 dollars total.

i mean there are other ware parts , thats the things that would be causing you problems that is.

id buy a proform and be done with it myself............
