bout to go vortec head hunting at my local junkyard

well i decided im going the vortec head route and will be putting on vortec heads and 1.6 rockers as my last bolt on part for my new engine.... i can get a set for 60 dollars at the junkyard, but i have to pull the heads off the vehicle myself which is not a big deal.... im sure i will find some this wednesday because ive seen alot of late model v8 trucks there since my last visit earlier this month... i want to get the 062 version heads because i hear they are better than the 906 heads..... i will have them cleaned and hottanked, check for cracks and warps, 3 angle valve job, resurfaced and have the heads modified to accept the .525 lift of the hotcam.. i will be using my manely springs, retainers and screw in studs from my iron l98 heads onto these vortec heads... all of this can be done around 600 and thats including buying the heads from the junkyard... thats less than brand new vortecs that havent been modified at all... and i will sell my edelbrock tpi intake for a vortec base that will be ported out.... i hear that these heads provide 50 horsepower over my iron l98 heads.. is that true...

Re: bout to go vortec head hunting at my local junkyard

I did an identical head cam swap on my 1990 boat motor. I went with the 906 heads, and then I used comp 918 beehive springs so that I didnt have to get the spring pockets cut and then I also pulled my own studs out and tapped the heads for screw in studs. Since the LT4 HotCam uses SA rockers I didnt have to mill the boss down for guideplates. I got the heads for 200 and all the equipment and parts for about 500. The engine is the nastiest mild combo I've seen. Idles super smooth and hauls a$$. I have 2 clips on YouTube of my boat running with the vortec LT4 combo under Chaparral Boat. (or Search Mkos1980)

When I get home from work I'll post the youtube clips or you can find them online. I have 2 clips, from behind the boat out of the water and in the boat with the engine running. It idles smooth I think.

Re: bout to go vortec head hunting at my local junkyard

For $600 find a pair of used aftermarkets, the cost to modify stockers and add a special intake would well pay for them and outflow the vortecs

Also, 062-906 castings arent that different unless you are using a small cam and swapping the heads directly on there with stock parts. 906 heads have a larger hardened exhaust seat which is easily rectified by simply replacing it. Since you're already putting the heads through the process this would be a non-issue. In short, for what you're proposing casting number wont make any difference

Re: bout to go vortec head hunting at my local junkyard

well the thing is that i can trade my edelbrock intake for a vortec intake so im not loosing any money there and my current l98 heads im running now have all the hardware to accept the hotcam that im also running now.... all i would have to do is swap my manely springs, retainers and screw in studs from the l98s onto the vortecs... so i dont have to buy parts... and the heads i can get for 60 dollars at the junkyard... so im not spending alot actually and im doing the swap myself so i dont have to pay no one just to hottank and freshen up the heads....
