L98 Timing
Hello all. I am trying to set the timing close enough to at least start the car. I replaced the pickup coil and the timing is off I think even though I did what I was suppose to do. The rotor was suppose to face towards plug number one after I install it and it does. But the timing seems off cause it won't start. I keep turning the motor over by hand and a little piece of tissue WILL NOT even shoot out. Is there something wrong? Why this tissue doesn't shoot out makes no sense to me, I can turn the crank forever. Please someone help.

Re: L98 Timing
Verify 300% that your wires are all hooked up correctly.
Make sure that you remembered to hook the p/u coil up.
Are the 2 connectors on the dizzy hooked up to the ignition module.
Screw tissue, it's for the toilet.
Remove all plugs.
Re-install plug number 1 part way
Turn engine over by hand
When you HEAR the air rushing around the plug in cylinder number 1 remove plug.
Insert a wood dowel or unsharpened pencil in cylinder one
Slowly turn engine over and watch pencil
When it stops moving out you'll know you're at TDC compression.
That's when you point the rotor at whatever post has the cylinder 1 plug wire attached
If you feel like pulling that valve cover to verify that both valves are closed, you can.
This will get you close enough for the engine to start and finalize timing with a light.

Re: L98 Timing
yeah and make sure that rotor actually moves when engine is turned.do you feel normal resistance from compression when turning by hand or does it turn real easy?chain issue?been burned by this one before.

does your engine make a pop or "backfire" kinda situation when you try to start it? You could have your dizzy in backwards. pull it up turn it 180 degrees then set it back in. but I guess this would only apply if you have removed the dizzy.

Re: L98 Timing
You CAN pull the dizzy if you want but you'll only need to if your plug wires won't reach what the dizzy says is cylinder 1 or if you can't turn it far enough.
Yes, you can make whatever post you want be cylinder 1.

Re: L98 Timing
If you get a backfire out the intake (happened to me, it blew off all the vacuum lines
), then your dizzy is 180* off. Lift the dizzy out of the block and turn the rotor 180* and drop back in while making sure that the rotor is pointing to plug #1 (Double check the harmonic balancer and degree tab on the timing gear cover, you want it at TDC). Remember to make sure that the EST connector is disconnected. Now try cranking while someone else turns the dizzy left to right until she fires up. . Now when it fires up, get the timing light and set it to 6*. Once you get your 6*, tighten down the dizzy bolt to secure it. Turn off the Camaro and disconnect the battery for about 5 minutes because you'll set off a troublecode (most likely a code 42). Now reconnect the EST connector and it should fire up IF the dizzy was 180* out. Good luck. Now guyz, was that hard to explain?
