Vehicle Speed Sensor for '85 TPI PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Heres my issue- I have a 1985 Camaro w/ the stock 305 TPI and and 700R4 trans. Just recently my car has been giving me the code for VSS and not shifting properly in forward gears, which from what I found out, the shift points on the electronic trans are controlled by the VSS. However, after I took the dash apart to get to it, I found that it has a connector that attaches to the circit board on the back of the cluster AND the speedometer. I've also had my speedo unhooked due to a broken speedo cable. So If anyone has worked with this sensor before or knows more about it than me please help!!!!! NONE of the shops by me can tell me anything. I would really like to know if the VSS runs off of the speedo, and I just need to fix the cable, or if the sensor is broke and where you recomend-year one has em for 140. My local shops are once again no help, I've already checked prices and they tell me my part doens't exsist.... any help is appreciated!!!!

My guess is that the car's throwing the VSS code because the speedo cable isn't hooked up. I suggest the trans problem isn't related (as I don't believe the 700R4 is controlled electrically, but I'm not an auto trans guy either).

The 700R4 trans is not controlled electronicly, but the tcc lockup is. The only thing electronic is the tcc lockup, and 4th gear pressure switch.

yep

Its funny, I was trying to get some part for my 700 in the 86 and the guy at the parts store said that its a 4l60e, I tried to tell him it wasn't but he kept saying that the book showed it being a 4l60e and denied that I actually knew what it was Needless to say I don't buy parts there anymore.

To the OP, I'm pretty sure the VSS is in the speedo and is run off it. I can see what my service manual says about it.

Yellow box on the rear of the cluster.

Thanks everyone, I hope you're right because those dashes are a B$%^& to take apart. Im sure you guys all know more than me about the trans. All I can tell you is that its an reman 700R4 with almost no miles on it, thats why im sure its the VSS issue. I dont think it has a lock-up converter but i remember some electrical hook ups when it went in. I have a chiltons, haynes, and 1985 service manual but none of them say squat about the VSS.

BTW You dont have to pull the dash apart to get at the gauges. There is a seperate cover for them.

I think the speedo does drive the vss in ur year car. 90-92 cars had the vss in the tail shaft of the trans and the signals for the speedo on those where output by the ecm
