TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

Replacing the plugs and wires on my '88 305 TPI. What type would you recommend (from your experience) for best performance and efficiency?

Thanks

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

If you dont have headers I would just buy decent stock style wires from autozone or wherever with NGK or Delco copper plugs. Expensive plugs and wires dont do much for performance over quality stock replacement items.

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

You want high quality wires with low resistance . MSD supercondutor Wires are good quality with very low resistance. I have been running them for years on my 88 IROC. Had Accels before and they fell apart and were junk. My .02 you can't go wrong with a good set of MSD wires.

What do you use the car for? Is it a daily driver? Show car? Drag racing? Street & Strip?

If its a daily driver, I suggest AC Delco stock...Affordable and gets the job done!

Street and Strip, Taylor wires and NGK plugs.

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

although I haven't put them in my 85 iroc yet (its being rewired for a MAP setup as i type this), my wifes van and my civic have E3 spark plugs in them...been very happy with them so far.
As for wires, I made the mistake have sticking oreilly's brand wires on my iroc and wouldn't do that again because of all the noise I picked up...will redo with the recommendations listed here.

What is recommended if headers are installed?? The MSD 31839 look like they will work with the 90 degree boots on both ends. Any other suggestions??

those bosh plat are the biggest pieces of crap I've ever had. they made my car miss something awful.

go with delco plat or NGK plat or iridium if you want long lasting good performing plugs.

I use the 90-degree MSDs with my Hooker headers. They work pretty good...

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

do you guys recommend boots on the wires with ceramic coated headers or is it a waste of $50? ... in particular looking at the msd wires recommended here and don't want to burn them up.

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

Need HELP ASAP on Spark plugs...
what I have is a 1967 block 327 5.3l with a TPI setup from a 88 350 iroc and a HEI with a super coil. the car missfires and the plugs foul out, I really am not sure what spark plugs I should be running in this kind of setup...
I know the 1967 327 calls out a 3/8" depth at a heat range of 3 to 4, while the only cars that ran HEI coils were 85-91 corvettes and they call out a plug that has a thread reach of .460" at a heat range of 4. Would the extra depth matter?
I am need of some help on this one guys...

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

just stick to ac Delco never had better for plugs the best stuff for your car is usually what came in it. Ac delco-Chevy champion-ford ngk-hondas/asian bosch- BMW,vw German etc. Etc. It don't matter if u get good plugs if they don't work right for YOUR car Other than that u just gotta choose how hot u want them. I use ac Delco r45t fyi

Yes it matters. What is the casting number on your heads?
Can you post a pic of one of the plugs taken out of your engine now?

You can clean fouled plugs in a sand-blast cabinet, then cook the tips for about 2-minutes each with a propane torch to dry the moisture & fuel from the insulator surface. If you then install these clean plugs does your engine run right for a while until fouling again? Or does it misfire no matter what ?

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

I am not sure on the casting numbers of the heads... i only know that they are stock 1967 327cid cast iron heads. I had the heads dip tanked and new valves and seats and shaved. I don’t have the plugs on me or a picture, but I pulled two of them and they had oily gas residue on the threads and the electrode was black and charred. They were fouled, I had cleaned them with carb spray before and put them back in and it ran okay for about 20 minutes then started to miss... Then replaced the plugs with new bosch platinum +4 (part 4999) and they ran a bit longer. But still fouled up and miss, ran good until then. I was told that the Accel 437SS (Silver Tip) plug was the way to go since they cover more of a heat range and will fit my heads.

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

I've always used bosch plus 4 platinums in all my vehicles, they have never given me any problems and work wonderfully. I had used Accel wires at one point in time, but currently am running stock wires. I am waiting to upgrade them to MSD asap.

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

You know I have also. Just recently I bought the +4 iridium fused plugs for my wife’s liberty and focus and within 100 miles both cars threw check engine lights and used my OBDII scanner and had misfire codes... "No I didn’t accidently swap plugs from the liberty to the focus! hahha", but seriously was not good. I checked with the parts store and they said they have the +4 plugs coming back ALLLLLOT.

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

I heard that same thing from a Advance Auto Clerk when I purchase the +4's for my '06 Cobalt (which I bought new in '05) that was around 36,000 miles, they were in the car until this past summer when I replaced them with another set, because I had over 100,000 on the car, I never had any problems. Before I replaced the stock plugs I had the ignition module go out, which was replaced under warranty. Years ago in my first car a '87 Z-28 with a 305 TPI I ran splitfire plugs, I had to because I had bad valve seals over the #8 piston and it would foul out a stock plug in a month, it took anywhere from 3-6 months for the splitfire to foul (depended on how hard I drove the car), didn't have the money to get the car fixed at 18 when I was paying for the car and car insurance, so this temporary fix worked for a while. It also lead me to believe that multiple spark paths was certainly the positive way to go. I immediately replaced the plugs (complete tune-up) in my current Camaro when I purchased it way back in 2000. I put quite a bit of mileage on it in the first few years I owned her, but now she barely get's a 1000 miles a year. I have never had any problems with these plugs, though I have replaced them several times in the past 11 years of owning her (I'm a high maintenance freak when it comes to the vehicles my family owns, I change the oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles which ever comes first religiously) .

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

I would also like to note that combined with a k&n air filter dropped in the stock box, the fuel economy on my Cobalt went up to 1-3 mpg depending on how hard I drive it. Sometimes it's hard to keep out of the throttle since it's a manual transmission (I wouldn't own a 4cyl that wasn't). I can't remember what the improvement was on my current Camaro though, but since she has never been daily driven I'd have to say I never cared, cause it definitely never hurt mpg's or performance.

Delco or NGK plugs only.
NEVER ever champion(they r 4 your lawnmower) or platinum (esp blower cars)
GM, Taylor or MSD wires only

Stop buying gimmicks and stick to the basics.

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

So I started the thread... I found the plug that works perfect!!! Fit and function and heat range. Buy the plug for a 1979 Cadillac Eldorado, and if you need a shorter plug for the fit to headers use a NGK V or such. I believe that I bought NGK Iridium IX 7355 / XR5IX plugs because they were higher end and had the heat range that would work for me. So far 6 months and no issues at all, a good plug.

Re: TPI - What spark plugs and wires do you recommend?

I have always run Ac delco rapid fire's in my car and I like Taylor wires that I make myself and recommend this to anyone! But I'm on here to see what everyone is using for plugs and I came across a plug called "Nology silver" and I work at a Cable company and know that silver is a better conductor over iridium copper etc maybe I'm falling under the science of it all but seem these would be an outstanding plug? does anyone have and knowledge or have use this style plug that can chime in on this? thanks in advance!
