TPI cam questions

Hi, I have 1987 vette and I pulled the motor out and I'd like to get some more horsepower out of my l98 tpi with aluminum heads. So I thought a cam swap would be a good idea. Its a daily driver so don't want to fight it at a redlight and I don't know if you need to tune it after the swap? Post what cam swaps you did and how much you gain and change on the engine and give me your opinions on my situation. Also I'm getting headers from summitracing so I'd like to get the cam and lift kit there too. thanks

Re: TPI cam questions

the only cams that I know that you can put in without having to send the computer out for some different thinking is an lt1 or a zz4. Not sure of the lift or duration but I know that comp makes chevy cams (from what I have been told anyway) so I am sure you can find the same thing under a comp part number from summit. I just put an lt1 cam in my LB9 but have not fired it up yet so Icant tell you for sure what kinda numbers you will get but from what I have heard about ten to twenty ponies depending on which cam and what other adders you have. I would suggest putting some stock lt1 injectors in there while you have everything apart if you havent done so already of course, they just flow better.

Re: TPI cam questions

If you want to buy a GOOD cam, do a search for the "1994 Z-28 LT1 Roller Cam." You can find them for as little as $40. There are very simiar to the L98 roller cams. Here are the specs to the LT1 cam

Dur:203intake & 208exhaust, Lift:.450intake & .460exhaust, Lobe Sepration:116. This is with 1.5 rocker arms.

Or you can buy a Comp Cams computer controlled cam for under $300 which is Computer Controlled (meaning that it is within the programmed parameters of the ECM).

Re: TPI cam questions

Duration means how long the lobe keeps the valve open. Lift means the height of the lobe (How much it lifts the valve open). Lobe seperation means how far apart the lobes are from each other. The more it stays open, the better and air enters/leaves the engine. The higher the lift, the more air enters and exits. But you have to be within range of the ECM's programming. If you go too much, you'll run into vacuum issues and the Camaro will not run correctly. As for how much power, could be anywhere from 1-10 horses, dpending on everything else such as heads, intake, exaust system, and cars very own wieght and PROM settings.

Re: TPI cam questions

ZZ4 cam is the one the Chevy used with similar alum heads on the ZZ4 crate engine. Kicks a*** on TPI.
Muscle car idle sound . great idle and good performance.
471 INTAKE AND 510 EXHT WITH 208/221 DUR @ .50
Requires upgrade to ZZ4/LT4 springs ( should change out you old tired springs anyway )
http://paceperformance.com/index.asp...D&ProdID=24732
ZZ4 cams available as new crate engine takeouts under $150 ; sometimes less than $100

Will run with stock tune but tune can/should be "optimised" to get the best out of it; especially if you are doing other perf mods

Re: TPI cam questions

zz4 cams are found all day long new on ebay, and used just about everywhere else. You'll never get a dialed in tune unless you or someone else spends some serious time collecting data and buring you a proper chip. Off the shelf chips will do little for you
