IAC diagnosis question?

I have suspected that the IAC in my 89 IROC 5.7 is faulty, but my question is if the IAC is unplugged and you start the car should it idle normally and throw a code to the ECM. The reason I ask is because I had it unplugged, started the car, and it idled fine, but did not throw a code??? Just wondering.

How it idles depends on the position of the IAC when you unplug it. If it was idling fine when you unplug it, then it should continue to do so.
No code is normal.

If you have a slightly high idle right after a cold start, but it settles down after a couple of minutes, then your IAC is probably functioning just fine.
