Throttle sticking - TB or tranny?

My car has an issue of very randomly having the throttle stick, always in the same small range of RPM, 1800-2000 in park, after some driving, usually some spirited driving. It might do this a few times in a row, or not do so for a few weeks. To remedy the situation I shut the car off, go underhood and turn the TB to WOT then let it return on it's own, somewhat violent motion . 99% of the time this "solves" it, start the car up and it runs like it should. I can't remedy it by just reving the snot out of it while driving and trying by just using the pedal with the car off hasn't been as effective either.

Anyway, is it somewhat common or heard of for the TB to stick? Or could this be a tranny issue, like the throttle valve/TV cable? The trans was rebuilt right before my TPI conversion in 2002....only 20k ago by a very reputable 200-4r builder in Illinois.

It's the throttle body, pretty common for the shaft bores to wear.

Thanks for the reply. Is it something fixable or worth fixing, or just better off replacing the TB? I bought this one used, I wonder if the owner had the same issue but didn't mention it.

I had a 58mm HOLLEY that did the same thing. My car came with the 58mm when i bought it. I recommend staying with the stock size (48mm) or 52mm. Also i would just replace with a new one.

Did you know that if a stock TPS is bolted to a Holley throttle body the tab will hang up on the throttle body unless the tab on the TPS is cut down?

SHould be the same, but don't pay anything extra for the 58MM TB if you don't have to.

I have them fairly inexpensively. I'm picking up a new line. Let me know if you want a price.

Re: Throttle sticking - TB or tranny?

It's not a big deal, just grind the tab on the TPS down until it doesn't rub anymore. Someone gave me a Holley 52mm TB because the throttle kept sticking. You can see the scrub marks in the billet where the TPS tab was rubbing. As soon as I held a stock TPS up against the TB it was obvious the tab would need to be shaved.

That said it still won't make a car faster.

Yes i did know that, but that wasn't the problem. The shaft was worn enough in the housing and it would slide from side to side, creating the butterflies to stick once in a while. I would look for a throttle body that has brass butterflies rather than aluminum. Also like Drew said Don't get sucked in to the myth that a bigger throttle body is going to increase HP, A stock TB will keep up to a motor with 400+ HP.

Re: Throttle sticking - TB or tranny?

I'll keep my eyes open for another stock TB, hopefully by spring. Hopefully my luck is better this time around not getting one that's already worn enough that it gets stuck.

Re: Throttle sticking - TB or tranny?

Sounds like the same thing mine was doing. After going through every possible cleaning and adjustment process I found that the throttle return spring was simply worn out. Added another light spring from the throttle lever on the TB to the cable bracket and it never did it again. Cost about a dollar.
