Formy 350 build

Hey guys,

My dad recently picked up a 1988 Formula 350 with less than 48k on the clock. The motor was knocking so we tore it down and the crank is junk. Now he has forged flat tops, forged rods and a forged crank. He doesn't want any spray or boost. We also don't want to have to tune it. He wants cam advise. What is a bit of a upgrade cam wise that will work with stock heads and maybe potted intake and headers? He wants it to run low 13's if possible.

Thanks guys,

Dustin

Re: Formy 350 build

Whats the aversion to getting a tune done on it, only helps optimize things and keep the motor safe.

Re: Formy 350 build

I have the LT4 Hot Cam. People say it doesn't run well with the computer but I have had no porblems. Drivability is very good. On another thread guys are takling about how good the Crower cams are. Many people have had good success with the 268XFI comp cam. If you have a set of the 113 casting Corvette heads and can port them and set them up for the additional lift you should have no problem with your goals.

Re: Formy 350 build

Also, if you follow some of the treads on here about porting the base, plenum and siamesing some aftermarket runners I am sure you will be very satisfied.

Re: Formy 350 build

So are bottom 13s acceptable with 113 heads, a small cam and a mildy porter base, slp runners, and a ported pleneum?

Re: Formy 350 build

If you port your base and port the aftermarket runners yes you will be in th ballpark. With a good exauhst 12's are possible,.

Re: Formy 350 build

Is it worth trying to clean up a set of 113 heads if Im porting the intake?

Re: Formy 350 build

Yes, the 113 only go about 200/160cfm if youre lucky.
The intake tract doesnt want to do much more than 220-23xcfm unless you put bigger valves in the exhuast does alright.
Last one Id done was on stock valve size (ported 113 head), ported base/runners/plenum with a small 213@.050 cam and a good tune would smoke (not just spin) the tires with no problem at all in fact ate a new $2800 700r4 in 8 miles. Id be surprised if it wasnt doing low 13s or better.
Million ways to do these TPIs depends on your wants and wallet.
I have the LT4 Hot Cam. People say it doesn't run well with the computer
Hopefully you got a tune on it.

Re: Formy 350 build

I had to have a chip burned because I am running the 24# LT1 injectors. I had Brian at TBI chips burn a chip. Since I didn't do that myself and it wasn't done from dyno information I would hesitate to really call it tuned. I don't believe much power was left on the table from the chip. The small outlet on the Edelbrock headers and my compression is on 9.0 to 1. My Air fuel was 12.8 and I am running 36 degrees total timing. The curves was very smooth on the chart. I don't know how much he changed things for drive-ability. Driving manners are good though.
