Runners to plenum & base torx bit size?

Searching through old threads I found 47, 50 & 55. Sometimes the same person saying different sizes, but never seemed positive of it.

Before I go buy a $12 torx bit, I'd like to know which ONE I need. Not spend $36 & take the 2 wrong ones back.

Anybody here KNOW the size? Or can take their torx bits out there "right now" & check to be certain?

T-40 and/or T-45 will do all the bolts on the intake. I think its T-45 but not sure. T-50 is useful, as some bolts for accessories are that size (alternator comes to mind)

You're better off finding a set of Torx bits if you plan on working on Chevy alot.

Not to be rude, but I did talk about people having posted what they THINK it is vs actually KNOWING. Thanks. You added to the "Ummm....I think it is...." sources of Searches.

If anyone ACTUALLY KNOWS? Post up. If not? Pleases do not litter TGO with more uncertain Search results. Things like that are why people don't bother searching. It just gives too many uncertain results & is a waste of a persons time trying to do so.

T-40 is what I used when I replaced my injectors.

Runners to plenum bolts are out & yep.....T40!

Seems like a Sticky of verified nut/bolt sizes for our cars could come in handy for things like this & figuring out where the year split was for English to Metric changeover.

It looks like 1 torx bolt got lost at some point. One of mine was a standard hex head bolt instead.

Not to be rude but......you could just use some common sense and figure it out on your own like any intelligent person would do, instead of begging to be held by the hand all the way to your fisher price toolbox to find the appropriate tool on an internet forum.

Well, that WAS rude. No begging was involved. If I had had any, I would have checked it myself, but I didn't. And all the TGO searches came up with vague answers. Even your And/Or answer was useless. They ARE 40s. Not a single was a 45, like your cluttering guess. Please don't clutter TGO with more guesses as to what something is. Answer things correctly or don't answer them. Is that real hard?

Not having ANY torx bits, I didn't want to go spend $9-$12 on the Craftsman (all I buy, not Fisher-Price which is apparently what you do, since it all that you could think of). I asked so that I could go buy the ONE I needed, not a set of 6 of which 5 I didn't need.

You would be better off with the set instead of just the T-40 since there are a lot of them used in our cars. Not to mention you could have just bought a small range of them and tried them out and returned the ones you didnt use. But that requires effort so I see where you are coming from. And it does depend on the car as my '85 has T-45's and my '91 has T-40's

If you ever have to pull your front accessory brackets, you will also need a t-45 AND a t-50. Do yourself a favor and go ahead and buy hardened impact torx bits when you buy them. I rounded off 3 cheap ones before i got smart.

Wow. Never seen so rudeness just for asking a simple question.

I have all the little torx drivers that are like screwdrivers for interior stuff & such, but no...There is NOT a bunch of big (T40+)torx stuff. Otherwise, I would have had this problem before now.

You really think driving 1.5hrs ONE WAY to buy 6 bits, 5 of which you don't need, then driving BACK 1.5hrs (one way) is a logical choice? And paying $9-$12 for 6 bits vs just spending $9 on the ONE that was needed? Yes....The T40 is $9.

Get real people. I can't understand why there is such rudeness brought about by just asking a simple question. Isn't life much easier to just ignore something that spending your time responding to something that you can't help with in the first place? I guess my life isn't empty enough to spend my time responding to people's post & doing nothing but insulting them in some way.

I asked for a torx bit size. How did I bother either of you guys by asking? I didn't. Did you really feel compelled to post anything but a helpful answer?

I'm starting to learn where the 'turdgen' name came from & why the owners are looked down on by other car groups.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind if I ever swap out for a serpentine setup. Right now, I'm running a 87 MAF v-belt 350 and haven't encountered any torx bits on the accessories yet.

I was reading about either the bolts or the torx bits being rounded off easily, so I wasn't waste my $ go buy cheapo Taiwan ones.

I only use PROTO tools, but thats because i get a 50% discount because of where i work. They are some of the best, though.

Re: Runners to plenum & base torx bit size?

just gonna say that it does depend on the year and the fist few years had different size bolts than the later TPI's did. also, there is a lot of stuff you may need various torx sockets working on a older GM, which is why i just went out and bought a set on a rail....for like 15 dollars.....you paid 9 for one....i paid 15 for 8....and i have used every last one of them on a third gen, so if you do a lot of your own work on your car you may want to consider picking up an assortment of torx sockets

Re: Runners to plenum & base torx bit size?

On my 86 LB9 I used T40 on the runners and T45 on the base if that helps any one out. I had to chisel 3 off because the previous owner tried to use the wrong sizes and screwed up the bolts. I'm replacing all of them with grade 8 automotive bolts.

Use the more commonly available Allen head cap screws and you don't have to worry about what size Torx bit you need

Hopefully the OP got it sorted ,seeing the original question was asked nearly TWO YEARS (6-2011 ) ago
