'88 TPI Throttle Body - What threads on botom plate?

Hey guys,

Anyone here know what threads are used in the bottom plate on the throttle body?

I had an issue when trying to re-do my throttle body on my 5.0 where the torx head screws on the bottom plate were frozen and one head broke off. I got another throttle body for it, cleaned up nicely but when trying to put the bottom plate back on, the threads are a little tight so I want to use a tap to clean them out.

I assume these are metric, but neither my 3 x.6 or 4 x.7 are the right threads.

Did they use something like a 3.5? the 3 is too small and the 4 seems just a bit to large.

Anyone got an idea what they are?

Bruce

They are metric threads,I dont't remember what size they were.If I remember I can check thread size at evening after work.

Hey Jari,

Thanks!

If you could check the actual size and thread count, that would help me out tremendously!

Re: '88 TPI Throttle Body - What threads on botom plate?

I took one of the bolts from the bottom plate over to my local Home Depot and checked the sizing on the thread tool they have there. Would not fit into the 3X.6 but went into the 4x.7, threads seemed right but the bolt wiggled like it was smaller than that size.

This is my concern, if I clean out the throttle body screw holes with the 4x.7, then the bolts will be too small (just slightly) and then will come lose.

Did they make anything like a 3.5X.7 metric?

That's what this seems to be, but I have not seen a tap that size.

Any ideas?

Most cities have a tool specialty supplier. They can fix you up with the correct tap.

But I would just do it like this:

Turn the TB upside down and spray carb cleaner into the blind holes, and let it sit for a few hours. Then I would clean that stuff out with brake spray and blow the holes dry. Then I would lube up one of the bolts with wd-40 and gently run it into each thread. Clean out the mess with brake spray again and you should be good.

Yes, I'll give that a try again. Already soaked it in my parts washer and cleaned it good, just seems like there is something in the threads about halfway down the blind holes.

Thanks!
