Every engine modification you can do without removing the intake or valve covers.

To me full bolt-on with any car consists of CAI, Headers, exhaust, tune.

I might even go so far as saying 1.6RR's fall under the bolt-on category as its really a very fast swap with the majority of the time spent afterwords setting preload.

I consider my LT1 swap a full bolt-on LT1 swap. I have CAI, headers, exhaust, and a tune.

I never heard an official definition anywhere, but I thought it included heads and cam as well. Everything you can possibly bolt onto the car. However somewhere along the way I got the impression that power adders were not included in the term "bolt on".

"Bolt-on" is a meaningless monkey-spank term.

How about viewing bolt-ons from a different angle then. Bolt-ons would be items that don't void the warranty of a car, or can easily be removed to return the car to factory stock condition.

Heads/cam is a large departure from stock, and the ease of returning it to stock.

Re: What is a full bolt on l98

Some people consider bolt ons to be any modification that doesn't touch oil. Some consider bolt ons to be any modification that doesn't alter the long block, meaning RR arms, intakes, etc are ok. To some it's the shortblock. Depends where you are. To me, bolt ons are anything that doesn't involve the longblock ie the heads, stock cam, or rotating assembly. Does an intake bolt on? Yes, it's external to the shortblock. Does a cam? No, but it bolts IN.

True. Forgot to throw that in there too. Bolt on's include exhaust and induction mods.

Re: What is a full bolt on l98

Heres my list of "bolt-ons" to be considered full bolt on. This is basically everything you can do to free up hp without changing major parts or internals like heads/cam, crank/etc. Everything technically bolts in or on, but stroker cranks/heads/cam etc are not easy modifications.

Bolt on List:

-- Headers and catback exhaust
-- Intake mods, aftermarket base/runners/ported plenum/throttlebody for TPI or alternative intake like superram/miniram/stealthram/etc.
-- 1.6/1.65/1.7 rockers are a bolt on and easy to do, although "internal" part.
-- Underdrive pulley setup
-- Electric water pump
-- Gutted TPI airbox or some form of Cold Air induction setup. Can even do gutted MAF if its MAF car
-- Tune. Chip easily drops in place and is a necessary upgrade to make the above mods worth it.

Other miscellaneous items not related to directly increasing hp by airflow but by rotating mass reductions (same category as electric waterpump and pulleys) can include lightweight flywheel/flexplate and lightweight driveshaft. Could also include smog pump/AC delete stuff as they may have a tiny bit of rotating resistance and free up power but its really not much of a mod. Just frees up room in the engine bay.

You can do aftermarket ignition box and coil/plug wires/plugs etc to ensure engine is in proper running condition, but generally dont expect to make alot more power with those mods but it may make a few ponies on a dyno, you never know til you try it so they can be a "bolt-on" mod.

My car had everything above but waterpump, aftermarket ignition (had plugs/wires/coil upgrade tho) and driveshaft/flexplate mods. ran 12.95 at 103.8 mph

Now a set of race slicks and torque converter are THE 2 best mods you can do to just about any automatic car, I dont consider a converter a "bolt-on" mod but its necessary to get the most out of any combination of parts.
