Do I need a new MAF???

87 Iroc throws code 33. I cleaned the maf and replaced the relays also. The car will sometimes drive fine for miles than throw the code and I will pull over and disconnect the battery and it will run fine sometimes for 100 miles or 1 mile, its very random. I had the car for 3 yrs now and it just started doing it this summer..You guys think my next move is a new maf?? Thanks guys!!

Re: Do I need a new MAF???

Ok, took the car for a ride tonight, I was cruising at 60mph and after about 4 miles the light came on again so I pulled over and the car was running bad, I left it running and I unplugged the MAF and made no difference. I shut the car off for like 30 seconds and started it back up and it ran better so I drove it home with it still unplugged.

Re: Do I need a new MAF???

I had a bad electrical connection in the plug going to the MAF. Bought a replacement pigtail and soldered it in, and it solved my problem. may not help, but you should look at the connection.

Re: Do I need a new MAF???

Mine did the same, and actually ran better without the MAF plugged in. Drove to Autozone, uninstalled my MAF, took it in and bought another with the core in hand and installed the new one in the parking lot. I did replace both relays at the same time for added insurance but kept the old ones to use as my fan relays.

I cleaned all the connections on the MAF, and both relays and it ran perfect for 3 weekends, that the longest it ran without throwing the code, than out of the blue, driving at a steady speed BAM it throws 33 and the car runs like crap again, had to pull over and pull the battery cable off and than she ran fine again..ughhhhhh

Re: Do I need a new MAF???

Yes, it worked. Been running fine since. I did troubleshoot through the FSM first and it ended up being the MAF. Same problems you are having but always recommend going through the complete troubleshooting process first. Hope you fix it soon.

Re: Do I need a new MAF???

Just run with the MAF unplugged for a while. It's what I've been doing while I try to troubleshoot what's wrong with my MAF/relays.

While I'm on the topic anyways, where are the MAF power and burnoff relays located on an 89 GTA?

When it throws the code the car idles very low and stumbles till about 2 grand or so than runs fine, under 2 or 3 grand it runs horrible

Re: Do I need a new MAF???

Sounds almost exactly like what mine is doing. Mine came on suddenly. Drove it to work and it ran fine, started it up 8 hrs. later and as soon as she fired it shut right off. Nursed it home and as was stated above I needed to keep it above 2grand. After a lot of cursing and head scratching, I (for reasons as yet unknown) took the air hose between the throttle body and the MAF. Restarted the car and it ran better than ever, Unplugged the MAF with car still running, shut right off, restarted (still unplugged) ran perfect. I also shot an entire can of cleaner through this thing with no improvement. The only time I got any codes was when the hose was off or it was unplugged.
Is it normal for a MAF to die like that, no codes and no symptoms?
The other puzzling thing is my scanner won’t connect to the ECM, I get the codes by shorting the ALDL. I tested the scanner on my daughters 91 Beretta and it connected just fine, so now I’m concerned about the health of my ECM.
I too would like to know the location of these relays, and could one of them be the problem and not the $300.00 MAF sensor?

Re: Do I need a new MAF???

Okay so i just replaced my maf sensor again. My car starts but wont run which is what it did before i replaced it. If i unplug the connection under the maf it runs but idles and rev high like mad. no way i can drive it unplugged. Already checked the voltage on the wires and they are fine. so now what?
code 33 flashes for mine too.

Hello NY87Iroc!!

Instead of taking off the battery negative cable every time, try just taking out the 20 amp ECM fuse in the pigtail beside the battery on the fender, it's simpler than wrenching the battery every time!!

It can be done with your fingers, no tools required!!

No need to reset your radio's time or station presets!!
