88 350 tpi timing
Ok I was replacing my distributor cap and it was getting dark me and my friend didn't realize there was a slot for it to fall in so I tried turning the cap to get the holes to line up. Well when I tried to turn it I turned the whole distributor and now i don't know where to turn it back to? I don't have a timing light at the house. So what should or can I do? I'd it alright tp drive? Please help thanks guys

Remove #1 spark plug , put finger over hole and bump engine over. When finger is blown off hole is now on ( just past ) TDC @ #1.
Look at timing mark at front of engine and wind crank back until mark on balancer lines up with 6 degrees mark on timing tab..Reinstall dist with rotor pointing to # 1 spark wire.
May have to use long screwdriver to turn oil pump drive in the hole so it lines up with the slot on bottom of dist so dist will drop in and seat correctly
Check which wire is #1 1st.May no longer be in stock position @ 6 o'clock
Should start and run but still need timing light to set correctly

When you get that timing light I believe the base timing is like 10*, but there should be a sticker under the hood that has the emissions information, base timing will be on one of those stickers.

You'll need to disconnect the set timing Connector a weather pack connector with brn/wht stripe wire above HVAC housing. You don't need to do that if you're just doing DTC.
if you've got plenty of miles on the engine the timing chain will have stretched a bit which will throw off the timing by a few degrees if you don't compensate for the slack.
To compensate for the slack If it's past the timing tab clockwise when it blows your finger you'll need to turn it counterclockwise pass the tab then clockwise to DTC to take up the slack.
If it hasn't passed the tab then just continue clockwise to align with DTC. line up Distributor #1 with rotor this will get it started but I wouldn't drive it until I got a timing light. If it's stock set @ 6, or if it's modified you'll have to play with it to see what it likes.

Ok thanks guys I got it in time a couple days ago. It still has a slight miss at 1200-1800 for some reason. We think it's my distributor, the pick up was greenish and the inside was rusty.

Diconnect the set timing connector start & ramp idle to 2-3K rpm if
it jumps around it may very well be a worn distributor, or the pick up coil a
