86 Z28 TPI Overhaul

So, I've been collaborating on putting some mods into my 383 TPI Z28. Mostly all I've really thought about are intake (air induction) mods being that 383's can be air hungry. Here's what I've thought of so far, please keep in mind that I don't have the most glamorous budget, however.

Engine Mods:
Eldbrock Hi-flow TPI base intake with runners, gaskets, and bolts. (Around $1,900)

Holley 58mm butterfly throttle body (Around $380)

Hypertech PROM chip (Around $120-$150)

Hooker Aluminum Headers (Haven't estimated price, my father may have a pair lying around)

Accel 30 or 36 lbs injectors (Around $350-$400, I believe)

I have yet to find a Hi-flow Plenium, so if somebody could enlighten me to where to get one, let me know. My idea is (being that I'm going to college to be a machinist) as a project; taking a stock plenuim and boring over the runner ports to match the diameter of the Hi-flow runners.

Platinum spark plugs with MOROSO plug wires.

Possible MSD ignition mod.

Suspension mods:

The only thing that really comes to mind is putting in a couple of sub frame connectors on and getting new urethane bushings. So if yall could name off some good suspension mods, I'd appreciate it.

Body:

Have a few dents taken out, then outside body and ground FX repaint.

Strip aftermarket tint off of rear hatch and T-tops.

So what should I replace/add to the list?

You have an 86 IROC. YOu may be interested in this here to help your project rebuild ( https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/misc...op-manual.html ). The Plenum is just that. You would have to shove down the inside walls near the TB, shave down the 2 walls just behind the entrance where the TB mounts, and shave down the inside of the walls where the air enters the runners.

Once you get your gaskets to the 58 mm TB, lay it agianst the opening of the plenum and mark the plenum with a black felt tip. THen get a grinder and start grinding away to open up the plenum. Then do the same on the plenum runner side. Put the gasket and mark and grind away to achieve the port matching. You may be able to siamese port the runners but Im not to sure. You'll have to investigate to be sure.

Oh ya... I forget to mention that to people, especially at places like O Rielly's and Autozone. It's an 86 with bored over 350 TPI out of a 87-89 IROC. They always give me a puzzled look when all that shows up in that year is 305 TPI.

But when I do have some extra money I'll get that.

I'll just mark it up, write a CNC program, slap the plenium in the vice and precision mill those holes open! BAM! lol but this program will be a loooooooooooong deal. I don't have a lot of money at the moment. I'm sure that I'll find a good job by the time I get to CNC machining in college. (2012 fall semester.)

I've got to manage this project along with my 85' Berlinetta restoration. Lmao

Re: 86 Z28 TPI Overhaul

Have you thought of going with a FIRST setup? I hear they beat the snot out of just about anything else on the market as far as a tpi setup goes, and from a quick look it seems to be cheaper in the long run than your plans now.

I bet after you shave all of those edelbrock parts they still don't flow as well.

Re: 86 Z28 TPI Overhaul

Actually, a TPIS MiniRam on a 383 can produce 500+ HP, far more than a HSR, First, Hi-Flow, and Accel. I got proof of a magazine who did a DYNO and the TPIS MiniRam dominated.

Anyone interested in a genuine GM 86 or 87 Shop Manual? If so, click on the 1986 or 1987 in my signature block.
