Noisey Timing Gears
I know that we are not supposed to have noisey timing gears on our TPI Camaro's due to the Knock Sensor. But how is my Bro-n-law able to run his HSR without having any engine trouble?
He's got an 87 IROC.

Re: Noisey Timing Gears
It's neither. I saw when the builder installed the timing gears. I was gonna do the same but I found out that timing gears are bad due to the knock sensor.

Re: Noisey Timing Gears
Is it a gear drive timming setup?
If not did you remove one belt at a time to see what bearing oor pump is making noise?
If it is a gear drive, on a maf car you can just unhook the knock sensor.

Re: Noisey Timing Gears
So there's no problems if we disconnect the knock sensor right? And yes sir, it's maf.

Only if you over advance your timming. make sure you run the correct fuel grade for the timming you run..

Re: Noisey Timing Gears
Last that my bro n law told me was that he felt his Camaro idle a hell of a lot smoother when he used 91 octane. So I don't know if that'll do the trick. But I'll let my bro know the good and the bad. I've told him that metal gears interfere with the knock sensor in such a way that timing will be retarded due to excessive noise also that removing the knock sensor will not let the ECM retard the spark to reduce harmful ping if present. But thanks for the info man. Much appreciated
