I want to delete this black thing... how do I do it?

On my L98 I want to delete that black box/mess of a thing that pretty much blocks plug access on the passengers side. Also what is it? I've seen it gone on alot of cars I just can't exactly figure out what its for? Heres a pic not a good one but you can see it. About middle ways back on the pass side.

It won't be any easier to get at your plugs after you delete that black thing.
Change them from the bottom. your hands and arms will thank you later.

From the looks of that pic, you have a pretty clean car. Don't go deleting this and hacking that....

That's the AIR pump diverter valve. It's for emissions. I wouldn't recommend deleting it if your area does emissions testing.

That's the AIR pump diverter valve.
That's on the passenger side. I think hes talking about the box on the driver side.

He's talking about the passenger side. That box on the driver side looks like a siren for an aftermarket alarm system.

yea the black box on the driver side i wondered about to. It looks kind of like a light bulb inside it but I don't know what it is. Its not hooked up though. I've got a set of headers that don't have the provisions for the little lines. Will I be able to use those headers and keep the air diverter.

You can but not without some modifications to the headers. To keep the system functional you'd have to drill little holes into the headers and weld in the air pipes. My SLP headers came with the AIR pipes but I cut them off and deleted the AIR system. I live in Florida so they don't do emissions here.

Just remove the box and the pump and get a shorter belt. Keep it around just incase u want to reinstall it if u decide to sell the car.

Putting in my 2 cents in... If you don't KNOW what it is... Don't go deleting it.

Re: I want to delete this black thing... how do I do it?

the box on the driver side looks like the horn from an aftermarket alarm system. Pitch it.

As mentioned, the stuff on the passenger side is pollution control stuff. Depending on where you live you may or may not be able to get rid of it without inspection problems. The one on my IROC is long gone, but I'm lucky enough to live in Vermont.

Delete it! Buy some nice headers and start going to town. It cleans up the motor compartment SO MUCH! And changing plugs are really easy now lol!!

I kept my AIR system, and removed the A/C instead. I have lots of access to the spark plugs and I'm still emissions-legal in all 50 states.

You connect the large line on your heater core directly to the water pump and your other heater core line directly to the radiator.

I did this on my IROC years ago. The only drawback is that you get a slight amount of heat through your heater ducts because there's always hot water flowing through the heater core. I never found it to be a problem and really only noticed it when I was hard on the throttle. That said, you could always install a manual shut-off in the heater core line for summer use, though I like to retain full heater functionality incase I need a little defroster in the morning.
