Fuel pump "Whir/Whine" then car stumbles and dies!

So after the car runs for a little but the fuel pump starts whining/whirring and then gets high pitched then the car stumbles and dies. Two new fuel pumps and it still happens. Can it be a clogged fuel line or FPR? Its a 1992 Z28 5.7, Car has new Fuel Pump, Strainer, and Filter.

AirTex. Don't know what the first one was. Also has a new fuel cap. If at or under 1/2 tank the Pressure is very large and it seems like its way too much. I just drove the car(3/4 tank) for a good solid 30-40 min and she drove great. Anyting under that much and a hot day it will whine and then stumble then die! If it doesn't die she has no power! Iv used the button and found a few things related but no quite the problem im having.

This sounds exactly what happened to my car (92Z)....and when I pulled it apart, it was an Airtex pump (crap on a stick). I put in a Bosch pump and now I can actually hear the exhaust of the car...not the whine of the pump. (no joke).

I would drive a few miles, then the pitch would be high, then the car would struggle and die. The previous owner had put that pump in less than a year ago. The Airtex (crap without a stick) lasted about 500 miles......Nuff said.

I figured it would be Crap, but it was the're only stocked fuel pump and i needed one. It did the same thing even with the old pump. It has a one year warranty so if it fails ill bring it back and invest in a nicer one. and Erik did that solve your issues cause i have no problem when there is over 1/2 a tank in it. (Pump getting warm?)Also im just going to vent here, To whom ever owned my car before me I hope you feel great knowing YOU CUT A HOLE IN MY FLOOR TO SAVE YOU A WHOLE DAMN 2 HOURS!!!!! I took the tank out and did it the right way just to look up and there was a hole cut in my floor!

Re: Fuel pump "Whir/Whine" then car stumbles and dies!

My pump got really loud a few weeks before it failed. When I say loud, i mean I could not hear the rumble of my 3" magnaflow system, Just the whine of the pump. I was closer to 3/4 of a tank and 90 miles from home when it started. I would drive a few miles, then the I would lose the gas pedal (no fuel pressure). When I opened my window, i could hear the pitch of the pump get a lot higher just as the fuel pressure dropped. I would shut off the engine and then refire it and it would be ok for a few miles. Once I got home, i drove around with my fuel gage connected sticking out from under the hood to confirm.

A week later, I replaced the pump with a new bosch pump and I have had no issues for over 1000 miles.... and I can hear my exhaust again.

Where did you get the Bosch fuel pump from?

Re: Fuel pump "Whir/Whine" then car stumbles and dies!

I bought everything at Rock Auto....pump, intake strainer, and new sending unit (since my gas gauge didn't work either....)

The first time, it was a warm day (80ish) and I did not realize that the muffler heat shield had been removed from my car! It may have gotten warm but even after the car sat for 3 days, I was still having issues. 1000 miles on the new pump and no issues....but I am now putting a heat shield back under there to help.....

I do like hearing my exhaust........that the whole point right?

Sweet. Ya she hasnt seemed to be giving me any issues so far on the new pump. Just once when i got home after installing it?!?!?! Weird. I take it welding the hole back down is a bad idea with the tank there. I ill figure something for that!
