Very fustrated, pls help! MAF

Code 33!! I have replaced the MAFs and the relays that go with it, still getting code. I have no idea what to do now. Can someone pls help? I am not good with this stuff and its so fustrating!! Car ran great and bam, code 33. When it throws the code the car does not like to idle and runs rough. Its a 87 Iroc and I am lost..Any ideas where to look next? When u turn the key off and restart it it runs fine and the check engine light goes out, drive it a mile and easy into the throttle and the light comes on, sometimes it would take miles and miles to throw the code now its doing it within a mile or so..

I fought this once with a car I changed a cam in, once the code hits the car goes into limp home mode. I fixed it in the eprom reprograming.

The car does have a cam in it, I got the car 3 yrs ago and I drove for one summer with no issues, now its throwing code 33 everytime I try to drive it. I took it for a ride this am and went about 2 miles and the light came on and and ran rough, shut the car off for 2 mins and it starts back up just fine. I than drove it at 65mph for 30 mins and ran perfect, let off throttle to exit road and easy back into it and it throws the code..Could the TPS have anything to do with it? I have no clue how to do any sort of eprom reprogramming, I am 42 yes old and this my first injected car that I have messed with, I need help..LOL

The code 33 is based off a air threshold it it spikes about the threshold number, code and check engine light and limp home mode until the ecm is reset.

Re: Very fustrated, pls help! MAF

I have not done that yet but it says to start engine for a min till the light comes on, problem is when I start the engine the light is not on untill I drive it so can I still do that test even tho the computer seems to reset itself when I shut the car off? If I go out there right now and start the car it will run fine and have no light on, the car will idle all day and run fine. Its only when I drive the car is when this happens..very fustrating.

Re: Very fustrated, pls help! MAF

I would just continue on with the flow chart. Since this is a new issue It would not be a eprom programing issue however it can be fixed that way but you might be masking a issue.

Re: Very fustrated, pls help! MAF

Hypertechs made little changes to there programing off of a stock tune, if it is a piggyback unit I would take it out. usually when hypertechs go bad you get a code 51.

Re: Very fustrated, pls help! MAF

I don't even know what u mean by piggyback lol. I took the computer out of the car and took the 2 small screws out and took the panel off and looked in and theres a "chip" in there that says hypertech, I will put it back and and try to run the test u gave me.. Would a TPS have anything to do with this whole thing?

Re: Very fustrated, pls help! MAF

piggy back means the eprom is on a adapter piggy backed to the memcal. The tps will not cause a code 33. The green board on this pic is a piggyback, the other is a memcal.

yes I might be able to modify your hypertech programing or if you purchase a moates.net g1 adapter I could program a eprom to go on there back too stock programing and change the parameters of the code 33.

I was going to say it still sounds like a bad MAF to me. I had a similar problem, it would throw both 33 & 34 and would die while driving when the SES light came on if you let off the gas (wouldn't idle). I also changed both the relays and cleaned it with MAF cleaner and the 34 came back after a while. Changed the MAF and all has been good. Unfortunately as you must know it's a $300 part. Think I got a reman for like $260, but if yours was brand new can you take it back and exchange it?

Also..."33. High voltage (low vacuum) at mass air flow sensor (or MAP sensor)"...have you looked for any vacuum leaks between the MAF and the throttle body? There is a small elbow under the throttle body that can become very brittle too. See my post here for a pic: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...at-1988-a.html

Re: Very fustrated, pls help! MAF

If you are getting a code 41 you may have a bad ecm or memcal. I resolved his issue with reprograming. I have seen lately alot of the Hypertech 127062 eprom fail. I have had some success in repairing them but its a crap shoot.

you should just start with the ecm trying to get rid of the 41. If the ecm does not fix it time for a new memcal double check the ecm ground behind the passenger side cylinder head for being tight.
