Sensor that connects to egr via vacuum line?

Im just finishing up my 305 to 350 swap and I was just wondering if anyone knew what this sensor is. It's back by the distributer an connects to the egr via vac line. I looks like it is supposed to have three different wire connections going to it but I can only locate one. Can anyone help me out?

Re: Sensor that connects to egr via vacuum line?

That's the solenoid for the egr, works in conjunction with the egr temp sensors to activate the egr. Don't know where the wiring comes in but do know that mounts to the bracket that the coil is mounted on.

You know, In my car one of the vacume line actually snapped right before going to the solenoid and I was wondering what needs to be replaced, the solenoid?, does it comes combine with the vacume lines?

I have bad news if you are looking for a new egr solinoid... They have been discontinued since GM has branded them as "obsolete".

Its not called a temp sensor. In GM terms, its a EGR Diagnostic Switch or EGR Temperature Switch. It has no resistance nor does it have current. Its just a small piece of bi-metal that bends with heat. When the little piece of bimetal bends just enough, it'll ground itself at around 132*.

If you delete the EGR solenoid and Temp Switch, you WILL get a T.C. 32 (EGR Failure) and the ses light will stay on, all the time unless you disable the EGR within the bin file (MemCal). Deleting the EGR system is not recommended though. EGR introduces exhaust fumes into the combustion chamber. This introduction of exhaust helps keep upper cylinder temperature low. The choice is yours. But if you want to know more about disabling the EGR error, you would need a custom tune. The person that I would recommend is TunerPerformanc. He is very knowledgeable and know his stuff. He has been doing tunes since the late 90's. You can contact him here.

I understand but if I'm not able to make the egr system work right seeing the 2. Parts I need are no longer made and I've been to ever junkyard around there is no use to keep the ses light on.

I bet those 2 parts you need can be found.... Talk to Tunerperformanc and mention that I (Chevy86 IROC-Z) is referring you to "Virtual Junkyard". there at Virtual Junkyard, you submit a request and your needed part will be added to a list of customers requested wish list. As for the EGR Solenoid, you can easily test it out. Just get a small 9 volt battery and hook it up inline. With a straw, you can insert and blow. I believe the valve is open when not energized and close when energized, or vise versa. Without the EGR TEMP SWITCH, the egr solenoid won't work. You need to verify if the temp switch works. Remove the temp switch. Connect the " barrel" to one probe of a multimeter and the other probe to the pigtail of the temp switch. Now put the multimeter to measure continuity. Now have someone get a lighter and heat up the barrel. Once the internal temp of the switch gets hot enough, the numeral will ground out and you will get a reading on the multimeter. Or you can run the switch under a hot scolding water faucet. That was the way I verified that my egr temp switch grounds at 132* F (under the kitchen sink).

I've tested all parts after replacing the stuck egr.

Re: Sensor that connects to egr via vacuum line?

Ok, so in the fine picture of this solenoid, on the left of the unit (faces the firewall when bolted to car) there is a piece that has two metal clips and looks like it should have hose or something hooked to it. Is there indeed something supposed to be plugged in there? Cause I can't find anything that is unplugged on my car and nothing is hooked up there.

Re: Sensor that connects to egr via vacuum line?

The EGR Solenoid from a '95 Cadillac Deville worked on my "90 Firebird Formula 350. The bracket had to be bend a tad, but my mechanic was able to mount it in its normal spot. Standard Motor Product VS 25.

Re: Sensor that connects to egr via vacuum line?

I've unplugged the temp sensor and the EGR solenoid on over 20 MAF cars back in the day and they are still unplugged.
Never had a code for any EGR stuff.
IIRC, the ECM just grounds those parts to turn them on and there is no "feed back" to the ECM unless it sees something is grounded when it shouldn't be.
