A new chip needed
A new chip needed
Ok so I just finished installing an edelbrock intake, as&m runners, bosh 3 injectors @ 24lbs and can't get this thing to run right. It seems like its an ignition problem, it starts but doesn't idle and it backfires through the intake. I've tried everything my dad and I could think of and are stumped. The only thing that I can think of now is the chip needs reprogramed. Some help please.
Re: A new chip needed
With the maf unplugged it would idle buy it's self but only at 3k rpm. It was still backfiring through the intake like crazy. I can keep it alive for a little while pumping the gas whith the maf pluged in. Is their anyway to check a maf to see if it is good or not?

Re: A new chip needed
The mods you have done do not require a new chip. Sounds like the distributor is in 180 backwards. Do you understand what we are talking about? (p.s I am not trying to sound sarcastic)
Do you known how to find top dead center?

Pull #1 plug out, bump over till it pushes your finger out. Line up timing marks to 0. Pull cap and make sure, it should be right at # 1 plug wire. Trace down each plug wire, don't assume. loosen distributor and start it, move dist. back and forth till it runs good. Warm up and then set timing to spec. I find plug wires mixed up all the time, even when marked.

Yea I do. No prob in asking if I know how to do stuff. But just too make sure. I was pulling #1 plug, crank till I get pressure, stick straw in hole till I feel piston come to stop. Look where rotor is pointing. Correct? Also double check on firing order 18436572

The timing mark should be at 0 or TDC if piston is at top, double check marks, harmonic balancers do spin.
yes, 18436572
The other thing you can do to determine if its a lean fuel issue, get some propane with an adjustable valve and 6 foot hose. ( old smog techs called them propane enrichment kits) start it up, let it warm up, then feed the propane down the intake. Add a very small amount, if you can make it run smooth, its a fuel issue. KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUSHER HANDY!!

Found out it was a leek around the runners. It seems that the asm runners I have aren't fitting at all. I switched back to stock runners and it's running good. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next with the asm runners to make them fit.

What gasket are you running with them? Stock gaskets do not fit well with ASM runners. TPIS sells the correct runner gaskets for the bigger size.
