Motor Help
I have an 88 Trans Am 305 TPI, when I got to start it, it starts fine then almost idles out or feels like its gonna die but it doesn't. After I rev it up a couple of times it idles fine (about 1100). Also when I take off, its really slow getting up to 40 (1st) but when it shifts to second, it takes off. (have 700r4 btw). Then when going up to 120, it will climb to 120 fairly quickly but then it'll pretty much stop, but it'll keep climbin to 130 or so, it used to just climb steadily all the way to 130, but now after 120, it takes forever. What is causing all this? I cannot figure it out, does motor mileage affect it this bad? (about 250,000 miles-270,000 miles)

Re: Motor Help
wow, thats alot of mileage. You might want to start with the basics and do a compression check

you aint kiddin lol, I did about march or april. It has good compression ratio, as far as it not going into overdrive at full throttle, I talked with a mechanic today and he said check the throttle detent cable? Which one is this? How do I adjust it?

Re: Motor Help
If it was the fuel pump, it would start up, then die. Had to replace it earlier this year. It has a new fuel pump, tps (actually i have put 2 on it this year), iac valve, kinda new maf sensor, new injectors and complete tune up. The second tps sensor and the iac valve I replaced with FAST products instead of cheap stuff

Re: Motor Help
the only time it does stutter is on cold start up, but I will check the fuel pump when I get off work

Re: Motor Help
Normally 700-R4s don't do WOT shifts from 3-4 unless modified. They will downshift out of OD at around 50% throttle or so if irc.
I'd recommend by checking the transmission detent cable. 700-R4's are not like a Turbo 350 or 400 the cable is used for more than just a kickdown. Having a cable that not adjusted or has gone bad (letting it slip) can cause major issues.
Check out this post for more info: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...djustment.html
I'll also point out I like to put it to WOT using the gas pedal. The floor pan flexing or other issues such as a throttle cable can cause a pedal WOT travel to be different than pushing the lever for throttle butterflies open by hand.

Re: Motor Help
Alright thanks! also the trans is not stock, its out of a corvette, so I dont know if that makes a difference or not, I heard the corvette trans is better (trans is out of a 1990 vette). I'll check out the cable tomorrow. Also checked the fuel pump and nothing is wrong with it
