OK, i just bought this 91 formula tpi 350 car. Engine is stock, has been getting 14 mpg mixed(which is still bad for this car). The PO had adjusted idle high because once it warms up, it will stall out in drive at a stop. Ive adjusted idle down some, SES is intermittent and i havent had a chance to hook up a scan tool. I can smell fuel when i shut the car off. Fuel press reg i disconnected the vac line to intake and no fuel leaked out, but i can smell fuel in vac line going to booster. I cant find any vac leaks and hoses are new. I pulled front drivers side spark plug and it looked dry, but like it was hot, but temp stays around170-180 driving. Other than my rattling cats(which are being taken care of next week), why the poor idle and fuel smell? injectors?

 

ohm your injectors when the car is warm. If they are the original multi-tech I would have them hit the first trash can.

You should see around 16ohms with no more than a 10% variance.

 

how do i check them? also, filled up today and put sea foam in the fuel, but did the math and i got 17.2 avg mixed driving. not too bad, but i still smell fuel, dont see leaks, and still stalls on occasion warm at a stop in drive.

 

they should be .5 from each other good condition you will see 15-16.5 total junk will be 12 or below

 

if they are original I would almost be willing to bet you have at least one injector with an issue

 

Your lockup converter may not be unlocking when coming to a stop. When that happens the car will usually stall. The torque converter lockup switch can go bad. I'm not sure how to check it without taking the pan off. Maybe another member has a procedure they can post. Not a common problem but can happen.

 

hmm, good things to check. yeah PO had moved idle higher and that worked, but ive brought it down and had to move it back up a bit.. hoping to have time in next day or so mess with it.

 

got it scanned. EGR code. should have known better. Gonna buy one and put it in.. hopefully then i can reset the idle back down and it no stall anymore!

 

code 32 ? if the solenoid is faulty yo will need to convert to a cadillac solenoid or get a used one.

 

Put these in mine (had Ford pink tops) noticed right away an improvement.
Pinks and these are both Ford but it's design 2 Bosch(Pinks) vs. 3rd design Bosch(Yellow).
