what can i get rid of?
what can i get rid of?
since i'll be tearing the 305 out this spring, i'm trying to get a list together of what i can do to clean up the engine bay a bit without being TOO overzealous. So far i ordered up a 4th gen washer bottle and overflow tank, which i'll get to this winter hopefully. is there anything i can just sorta get rid of? the 350 wont need to pass emissions cuz the car is registered as "historic" in NJ so i dont need inspections anymore. I already ditched the cat for an electric cutout.
Can i get rid of the charcoal canister? what else?

Here's my engine bay ... I bet I got rid of atleast 150 lbs of crap and it still looks a little more cluttered than if like ... But some nice accesory brackets would make a world of difference

Re: what can i get rid of?
In addition to the things already suggested, here are some additional ideas:
1. Ditch the coolant diverter stuff over the passenger valve cover.
2. Replace the manifolds with air-less headers.
3. Tuck the harness so it's as out of sight as possible.
4. Run your plug wires under your headers.
5. Most importantly, restore (or at least thoroughly clean & detail) everything that's left!

Re: what can i get rid of?
thanks for the input guys. I have air-less headers already and the smog crap is out. I am gong to do the TB coolant bypass so i'm thinking i can move the diverter too. I was intending to do the the plug wires under the headers after someone showed me that to. what kind of EGR stuff can i look to get rid of? also i plan on keeping the cruise control, not sure why, but i feel i'd miss it if i got rid of it.

Re: what can i get rid of?
I got rid of pretty much everything on my 305, emissions arent needed here in the UK on my car as its over a certain age so all the emissions crap is gone, some of it was removed when i got the car but i took the rest off like the smog pump, then done the AC delete to tidy it up further

then i fitted hooker headers and had a full stainless system made for it and it went really well ! that picture was taken 2 weeks ago before i pulled it all out to replace with a 350 TPI
im prepping the engine bay at the minute but ive removed the cruise control now too and i will be smoothing out the bay before painting it.
On the subject of the EGR valve, i noticed when taking my engine out there was a vacuum line on it, i think, but that was it, im not sure how that thing works but if you havnt got any other emissions stuff on the car can you just pull that off and blank it ??

Re: what can i get rid of?
You'll have to burn a new chip to Delete the EGR ( or live with the SES light on). It's pretty much hidden anyway, and helps the engine to run a little cooler. If you keep the cruise, or HVAC, you will need the vacuum ball. You can mount it under the inner fender ( like under the battery). The charcoal cannister absorbs fumes from the gas tank, and allows it to vent. If you remove it, you will have a gas smell to deal with ( and fumes are flammable). Others have done it, and I'm sure they will chime in on what they did to compensate. If you just Cap Off the line, you will build considerable pressure in the tank.

I guess i will just leave the EGR where it is then, like you say it doesnt get in the way of anything and is hidden.
the charcoal canister was gone when i got the car over 9 years ago, to be honest i never even knew what it was for but i noticed the line for it after getting the engine out, just looks like a brake / fuel line that runs around the top of the transmission and then out down the passenger side of the engine bay, and its been capped off.
