restoring 85 IROC
restoring 85 IROC
My son drug hoe an 85 IROC last night. This car is all original an has been sitting between 2 pine trees since 1993. Is there someone out there that would rebuild the TPI to pristine condition. Can the injectors be rebuilt? IF the engine is numbers matching- should I rebuild the 305? I was told by the second owner the heads were not original. How do I check the numbers from the engine, heads, and trans to see if they came with the car from GM?
Re: restoring 85 IROC
If the body is in good condition, it might be a candidate for a restoration. Is there something specifically wrong with the TPI unit or were you referring to the car in general?
Injectors can be cleaned and flow-matched, or they can be replaced outright. There are several places where injectors can be serviced, like Cruzin' Performance and others.
If you remove a rocker cover and find the casting number from the heads, that can be cross-referenced to original series casting numbers. Someone may have done you a favor by installing better heads, or maybe not. Without the casting number it is all speculation.
Also, there was no serialization of the head castings, only the block stamping on the RH deck extension, so no one will be able to read a number to determine whether the heads are original. The stamped numbers are here:

Re: restoring 85 IROC
There is no point in putting money into the stock injectors(cleaning/refurbishing). These were not good injectors even when new especially compared to what is available now.
Southbay Fuel Injectors sell a superior replacement for a very reasonable price.
EDIT: I guess if you are looking to do a 100% factory/numbers matching resto, then having the correct injectors will be important. But if ultimately you are building a car you are going to drive and enjoy, an injector upgrade will make sense.

Pull the valve cover and see the casting number on the heads. Also if they are aluminum they are definitely not original.

[quote=midias;5731395]You should tell your son to stop drugging hoes and just pay them like the rest of us.
LOL I so wanted to put a similar comment up, but I refrained. I figured it was coming sooner or later.
