Long time to fire up.
Hey guys i have 305 TPI and when i 'm starting my car and i don't catch it on the first three cranks it takes like 10 cranks to actually get the car to fire up and when it does it seems like the starter stays running with it for a second or two after it fires. WHY? Is it just a TPI thing?

Under normal operation, the Fuel Pump comes on for 2 seconds when you first turn the key to run, and then stops. If the car doesn't start with this prime, the fuel pump will not turn on again until the ECM sees oil pressure starting to build. Cranking it for 10 seconds lets the Oil Pressure build high enough for the switch to turn on the fuel pump again.
Try turning the key to run, but wait 2 seconds to try the starter. This will allow the pump to prime the fuel rail and build pressure. In mine, you can hear the pump run,and then stop.

That's what I usually do is turn the key forward then put my seat belt on before i crank the car over. Also idk if its my battery or what but the car initially doesn't seem like it wants to turn over but once its up and turning it spins good

Just for clarification, the ECM doesn't look at the oil pressure, there is a mechanical switch (oil pressure switch) that closes and allows voltage to the pump...ECM only controls the fuel pump relay.

Jump in the car and see if it "wants to start"...if is does, then means you have spark, but no fuel.
PS..DO NOT try to keep the engine running on starter fluid.

Start a new thread my man, with that info...but we need to know what you have (TPI/TBI or carbed).
Also would be nice to know if the car ran...the slowly sdevelope dthis no start...or you bought one not runnnig...or was the car sitting for years...etc...give all info you know about the history of the vehicles,,,saves many of us asking a bunch of questions
