Maf part numbers different? Whats the difference?

I have a 1987 Firebird Trans Am 5.7 liter TPI

I just realized today that my maf part number is for 1988. I obviously have an 87 and the part numbers are different. I've had a running problem with my car for some time now so I was wondering if this could make any sort of difference. Also if I recall correctly aren't TPI motor supposed to run without the MAF unplugged in? My car did before but now when I unplug the mass airflow the car dies. I've had a rough idle for some time and I and I am suspecting the mass airflow maybe the issue because of the difference in part numbers for the make model and year. Any help would be greatly appreciated as usual.

Re: Maf part numbers different? Whats the difference?

I can't see there being any difference between years. They both use the 165 ECM so should be the same besides maybe a part number change for an improvement.

Re: Maf part numbers different? Whats the difference?

So my question is now would using the wrong maf create a running issue? And why are they different? Whats different about them?

I ask this because I'm having a running issue and I just realizes I have the wrong part number maf. The problem I am having is intermittent.

Re: Maf part numbers different? Whats the difference?

ok , heres my fix for all that" TPI hell in a gasolene overcoat" buisness. the number one thing that turns them into parts cars , IMHO is bad/ incorrect wiring. you NEED a FSM for your car . period. another thing ... the wrong , bad relays. this will also give you fits . be sure you get the factory part number for your particular application. THEN buy BWD brand relays, for your car to match. the SD guys have it easy. no %$#%^!! MAF to have to buy. and speaking of MAFS . i bought a MAF from oreilleys , a " rich porter " . NEW ONE !! i cant stress how important is is to your sanity to NOT get a "re-man " MAF sensor. i run one for a 89. know the condition of your ECM and PROM . are they the correct ones for your car ?? its only going to work as intended if YOU make sure its components are complete and functioning correctly. i have a 86 B4Z car .and it ,, finally runs well with NO CEL . im happy to share part numbers and such. if yours is making a carb look good, dont . fix it right

Re: Maf part numbers different? Whats the difference?

It's a shame the factory service manuals are so pricey.

All my relays are new and all the part numbers line up correctly for those.

Everything is new except for mass air flow and wiring harness.

actual print FSMs ARE pricey . but considering its the be all , end all of your particular car theyre worth twice as much. they answer questions you havent even thought of yet. without mine , my car would most certainly still be a collection of parts .

This x 1000! The Factory manual is worth its weight in gold when it comes to these cars. Trying to maintain just about any car from after around 1984 without one is like fumbling around in the dark. They can be had for around $50.00 on ebay.....
