question for john millican

I think in the later part of your article you said that you had to block off the emissions control devices on your LT1 intake, am I right? well the question is, I want to run this on my 87 formula 350, which now has a 383, but in CT I am still suject to emissions testing. do U think it is possible to rig something up to keep the emissions stuff, or should I just make it LOOK like it is still there and not worry about it? MPG is no big deal without the EGR, so I don't really care about the economical wiewpoint, but you think I could pass emissions?? your LT1 is in a first gen right? oh well, any help would be great cuz I can get the intake for 100 dollars complete with TB, just no injectors.

Im not John but I think I can probably help. If you look at this pic(sorry, not sure if this is Johns or RCRs) you can see how close the egr is to the distributor. That pretty much means no egr right there, but maybe you could fabricate some kind of external egr?

The above picture would be RCR's. He's got the pretty dist spacer.

Anyway, it is so close to the dist that I WOULD say it's impossible but I never say that word anymore. People told me that a LT1 intake would not fit at all. Well....

FAST has a a product that eliminates the distributor, called the eDist. Uses coil packs. Then you could run EGR.

Oh, and that intake for $100, buy it even though you may not use it. Sell it to one of us or give out the info so we can get it.

thanks for the help guys, I guess I will just make it look like it is still there for the visual inspection some how but block it all off, I figure if I have a good enough cat like I do, I can pass. and bout the intake, one guys will sell it for 100 with TB but no fuel rails (i think that;s the one) and the other guy will sell me the intake with fuel rails, but no TB for 125. . the TB from the TPI bolts right up, right? or do I want the LT1 TB, is it bigger?? oh well,t hanks for the help

FstBrd6point3,
buy the intake and fuel rail combo. your throttle body will
fit the new intake. and if you dont want it. turn me onto
the guy ill take it. all i am after are the intake, fuel rails and
regulator. ive got a vortec project and this is interesting to
me.
thanks

Yes, buy the one with the fuel rails, it's a better deal. Also you want to use your existing TB to make things cheaper. If you use a LT1 TB you need to get a new throttle cable and TPS sensor also.

I was wondering, and i probably would be sinking myself into more trouble than i can ask for, but i believe the V6's run an external egr. Wouldn't it be possible provideing it could be wired up correctly to run one of those?

branz28,
without major 'plumbing' the use of the egr for emissions reason
would be difficult. the clearence between the distributor and
manifold EGR passage is minimal. other than going to a distributorless
ignition and using the egr would not be cost effective. might as
well run an LT1.
wouldnt be the first time emissions killed a good thing!

I am running into the problem of needing the EGR as well. If you look at the pics (which for some reason are not showing up for me) it might be possible to run 2 pipes to a block. This block would then have been milled to match the ports on the EGR. So... you would then have a remote EGR.

The distributorless idea is cool though.. hmmm....
