I really like those black with red chevy bow tie valve covers made by GM Performance Parts. However, they are only available for perimeter bolt heads. I am building a 383 SuperRam engine for my 92 RS. My question: Do I have a choice between perimeter and center bolt heads...or do i HAVE to get center bolt heads since its a 87+ block? I was thinking maybe I could call AFR (want to get their aluminum heads) and ask if I could get 87+ heads with perimeter bolts. My only other option (that I know of) is to get center bolt to perimeter bolt adapters...but my ***...theyre like $150! Oh and one last question....will center bolt heads, c.b. to p.b. adapters, and the tall valve covers im talking about be ok with a superram...as far as clearance and install ease? How bout perimeter heads with the same valve covers? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure the SR base will accept new or old style heads..i/e the innner bolt holes are slotted for either. If so, either style of head will work for you.
But you do realize that since GM went to CB heads and valve covers, there's nary a leaky valve cover gasket anymore?

The valve covers have no relationship to the block.
AFR will be happy to set you up w/ heads setup for perimeter valve covers. They might come setup for both.... or I think centre bolt provisions cost extra.

so as far as the emissions junk, and any accessories or anything....everything will fit fine? And I think i will be going with the edelbrock base..and have it ported....unless its cheaper to just get the sr base.

??? I dont get it. Im guessing you mean that perimeter head valve cover gaskets tend to leak? How is that fixed? Or is it just something that happens? I never really knew that...if thats the case...maybe I will just get center bolt heads....hmmmm..........Originally posted by 8Mike9

Not entirely familiar with AFR's, but just tell them it has to have accessory holes like an 87-92 and you'll be set.
Perimeter covers are clamped in 4 place... could be unevenly. Centerbolts hold things more conistently around the edge. Not much you can do about it!

AFR heads come default perimeter; there's an extra-charge option for centerbolt covers.
Some manufacturers make their heads set up for both style of covers.

Did you buy your AFR's as perimeter or centerbolt? Personally, I am strongly in favor of centerbolt heads, especially if you want to run a solid roller cam. It should make adjustments a breeze.Originally posted by afgun
