My apologies if this has been covered, I did a quick search but couldn't find a definitive answer.

I want to get a good scan tool for my 87 GTA. I have one for my other vehicles, the Innova 3100 (ABS) but it won't work for older vehicles.

What's a good scan tool for our 30 year old TPI engines? I want one that has all the bells and whistles as possible.

 

Save the money and just use a paperclip. Same results.

 

Being able to read/record/graph live data is always nice, and makes troubleshooting MUCH easier..... The snap-on MTG 2500 does all sorts of neat stuff, and you can get 'em on ebay for under 500 bucks, with everything you need, and then some..... It will work on most any car up to somewhere in the 2000s.....

 

If that's your goal, then just use TunerPro. Much cheaper and gives you a lot of parameters to datalog.

 

Tunerpro rt is a great tool. It can be a real bear to connect to the op 1227165 ecm.

 

Yeah...not a helpful response for someone looking for honest and genuine help. Maybe the "use a paperclip" response is a common running joke but I don't get it. I really have no idea what that response even means. I seriously have no clue what "use a paperclip" means even in the joking format.

A paper clip can be used to read the codes with the check engine linger. Jumper the aldl connector at the drivers knee level a to b.

Gotcha...but I mentioned "bells and whistles" in my post. That means I want to plug a device in and have it tell me the codes. I don't want to count engine light blinks.

Autoxray makes several readers scanners that are OBD 1 and 2 useable. I have there ezscan 6000 but they don't make it anymore

 

I JUST went through this. I ended up building my own cable and using a computer with WinALDL and TunerPro RT. The cost was much less than a scanner, and I'm getting all of the data.

I think most people just use the computer solution.

An old snap on scanner will do the trick
The 2500 also called the brick....... look on eBay and offer up and let go
A good used one can be found for like $200. You can also scan other old cars if you find a complete one.......
Check local auto parts store they have some OBD I scanners
Also can get an adapter cable and use a OBD II scanner...

I can put a old school whistle on a paper clip...... lol
