L98 BUILD OPINIONS

I hate when unexpected stuff comes up, lol! Reason I'm throwing this out there is cause business is good(thank you Trump!) and i have a little expendable income this quarter. Before the holidays I was looking to build a motor for the wife's avalanche. Pretty sure that idea is going by the wayside(picked up a duramax pickup needing a new motor that's probably gonna be her new ride), so back to some upgrades on the IROC. So here's the dilemma... I'm not gonna do a full motor build this year, but would like to use parts I already have. I hate doing things twice, but I really want a good running car this summer. Have the following parts(which I think would make a good running car)... SLP headers, LPE 219 cam, and a set of (don't laugh) pro comp 190(5?) heads. Ordered 3.70 gears for the 9 bolt. I know there's better heads and cams out there, but I can use what i got without a full motor build. I have no problem spending a weekend installing what I got cause it may be another year or 2 till I do a full motor build. What would you guys do in my situation?

Re: L98 BUILD OPINIONS

You can throw it on now no problem if those heads have proper hyd roller springs on them and they check out ok.

Wont run super well if you keep stock tpi on it but it should pick up alittle bit and sound better
Will need a custom tune

If you go ProComp...make SURE you have 'em checked. Casting is pretty poor.

Yea I know... Got them pretty cheap, but was an impulse buy and didn't do any research till afterwards. Thinking about selling them and getting some 1040's from Rick. And yea, I'll be getting back in touch with you Justin about tuning.

Re: L98 BUILD OPINIONS

I wouldn't worry about using them....I'd just make sure I had a machine shop go over them....valve guides etc. etc. I have a friend using them and they run and perform great, but he definitely needed a little clean up at the machine shop. If you already HAVE em, I'm not sure I'd SELL them, just do your due diligence.

I mean....AFRs are AFRs though...so I'm not trying to talk you OUT of those!

Re: L98 BUILD OPINIONS

Couple hundred bucks you can have them checked out, proper valve jobbed, guide clearance set and decked square. Take them to P&R in greensburg if you are out this side of pa

Re: L98 BUILD OPINIONS

Is there much gain in going with the Procomp over 083’s? I have a new set I bought bare several years ago and assembled with PBM stuff. Was considering throwing them on an L98 I’m building for my 92Z. Of course I would still have my machine shop go over them for added insurance. Zyapoint, I hope I’m not offending you by asking on your thread.

Re: L98 BUILD OPINIONS

If the pro comps are machined properly and valve seat seals fine and guide clearance is ok and you dont have any other issues then yes they would be better than 083’s

If you need a budget casting try the assault racing head or proheader. Same thing just put decent valves and springs in

Re: L98 BUILD OPINIONS

Maybe I will do that. I am actually kinda curious to see how fast the car goes with what little money i got into it so far, lol. Thanks for the recommendation of P&R. Been looking for a shop to check out my duramax heads. Would work out good if I could have them do both sets. That being said, what springs should I use with the 219 cam? And don't worry about it Ty92z, I don't get offended, lol. Besides, we're here to share info right?
