Good cam for a stock 305 TPI I KNOW, I KNOW, JUST READ IT.
Being my car is 1 of 86 and in very good condition I do not want to do much at all to it. Especially not visible stuff but I would like to liven it up a bit. I'm thinking two ways to do that are cam and gears. Not going for big numbers, just a little more fun to drive and virtually invisible.
What cams would you recommend for a completely stock 305 TPI. In the future I may upgrade to SLP runners if I stumble across a set at the right price, Cat-back will probably get done, most likely a NO on headers as I don't want it to obviously modded.
Just something to get the most out of it. Tried searching but came up with nothing.

Re: Good cam for a stock 305 TPI I KNOW, I KNOW, JUST READ IT.
I’m not sure there is much to gain without some induction work. We did a cam only type deal stock rebuild L98 with headers and exhaust and it only did 226 whp which maybe is 10-20 more than some stock dyno numbers i’ve seen
it was a comp cam somewhere around 212/218 i think, i never saw the cam card.
That would be a 08-412-8 for a 110 lsa
08-501-8 for a 112 lsa
both would require some chip tuning
might do something like that or if you had more intake work, maybe next size up 218/224 or hot cam

I'd be happy with a 20whp jump. Like I said, I am not trying to win a race. I just want it more fun to drive and maintaining almost all originality at least in appearance.

Your ‘92 LB9 already has the L98 cam. But it also has the L03 exhaust. I’d leave the cam alone and just concentrate on the exhaust from the manifolds back. There are at least 25 horses corked up in your exhaust. You also have a 2.73 gear. Some pep could be added by changing gears.

I should rephrase.... you can run a big cam like a superstocker does and make upwards of 280-290 whp on all stock stuff but it wont be fun to drive and wont live long with street miles lol. Those cam lobes would be very harsh

GM94666492 cam
Y-Pipe
3:42 gears
Custom tune
I think your 92 may have the smaller outlet exhaust manifolds. Going to the 2-1/4" outlet from earlier years might be a good mod also.

I should also note that you can get quite a bit SOTP pop from a better torque converter.

Re: Good cam for a stock 305 TPI I KNOW, I KNOW, JUST READ IT.
There were only 2 different manifolds for the V8's throughout the years, but they were different depending on what motor and gearing package they came on. Here is the breakdown.
2" outlet manifolds with single 2 1/4" y-pipe
82-87 305 LG4 (VIN H)
88-92 305 L03 (VIN E)
82-83 305 Crossfire
90-92 305 LB9 w/o G92 axle (VIN F)
2 1/4" outlet manifolds with single 3" y-pipe
83-86 305 L69 (VIN G)
85-89 305 LB9 (VIN F)
88 350 L98 (VIN 8)
89 350 L98 w/o G92 axle (VIN 8)
2 1/4" outlet manifolds with dual 2 1/4" cats
89 350 L98 w/G92 axle (VIN 8)
90-92 350 L98 (VIN 8)
89 305 LB9 w/G92 Axle (VIN F)
90-92 305 LB9 w/G92 (Vin F)
The manifolds from the single 3" cat and the dual 2.25" cats are interchangeable. On the passenger side manifold, some will have the heat riser butterfly valve, some will have a spacer, and some will just have a donut gasket. You most likely have the wrong manifold for your application. If you have the larger manifolds, then it may be worth it to get the larger y-pipe for some more performance.

Re: Good cam for a stock 305 TPI I KNOW, I KNOW, JUST READ IT.
Yeah, I see that. But the tech data is wrong. Think about what an LB9 power rating would be with a peanut cam AND L03 exhaust. It wouldn't be 205 HP.
Re: Good cam for a stock 305 TPI I KNOW, I KNOW, JUST READ IT.
5000 redline for peanut cam and 5500 redline for l98 cam

The restriction before '90 was the peanut cam. After that it was the "peanut" exhaust.
Maybe think about it this way, how did the single cat '90-'92 LB9 go to the more restrictive exhaust, and yet gain 10 hp from the previous year peanut cam LB9?
Re: Good cam for a stock 305 TPI I KNOW, I KNOW, JUST READ IT.
Yeah, but that was all before '90. My '92 LB9 had a 5000 redline tach.

Re: Good cam for a stock 305 TPI I KNOW, I KNOW, JUST READ IT.
so all 305 auto and non g92 5 speed cars have the 5000 redline tach and all 350 and g92 305 cars got the 5500 redline tach because of the exhaust .. not buying it .. and everywhere i look it says you had to specify g92 to get the better cam and ive seen nothing about the exhaust except the n10 option ...

Here's screen shots the exhaust stuff.
We can continue tomorrow. Time to hit the sack.

I wish I still had my 91 z28 305 non g92 to settle this debate lol i never checked the cam or valve lift but do know it had the tiny exhaust which was perfect for a rear turbo. 9 psi made it into a bolt on ls1 in power lol. Idk if a peanut cam car would have gained that much but who knows

All speed density 90-92 305-350 TPI cars shared the same cam. A touch weaker than the 89 cam.

Thanks for not arguing with me Ray, but you got another chance now in this thread!
Chaz you make a great point on the HP numbers, By the specs in the link below it is 15hp difference from 87'. Are you sure the standard axle 305 TPI had the better exhaust in 89' and below? Something had to change to reflect this HP gain. If you look at the lift of the cam, the 88-89 peanut got the same grind as the 90-92 peanut. Maybe as a cost cutter GM just used 1 grind for all and did not reflect the tech sheets? In the link below this guy does state the standard axle 305 tpi got the peanut cam all the way through model yrs, he also specs that RPM reline on the tach as the determining factor.

This is something along the lines of what I am looking to do. Also considering porting/polishing factory heads and intake along with SLP Siamese runners

What's the limits of the heads and stuff on the 305, same as the 350? If so the GM cam in my signature works fine on stock heads, but I would suggest slightly beefier springs (~300-350lb). It's a little beefier than the stock L98 cam (higher lift, same duration but shorter LSA (112) so idle is a tad more noticible)
